Howard Klein Obituary

Howard Lincoln Klein, 83, of West Hartford, died Tuesday, (August 7, 2001) at Hartford Hospital. Born in New York City, NY, son of Henry and Amy Hayden Klein, he grew up in Dobbs Ferry, NY and attended the Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY. He was a graduate of Princeton University, magna cum laude, where he also lettered on the varsity tennis team. After graduating from Harvard Business School, he joined the Gleason Works, Rochester, NY, in 1942. As a machine tool executive for Gleason, Mr. Klein traveled around the world, including Europe, Russia, China and Japan. In 1966, he moved to West Hartford to work for the Pratt & Whitney Division of Colt Industries. In 1970, he joined the Whitnon Spindle Co. of Farmington, retiring in 1984. An outstanding tennis player, he was a member of the Hartford Tennis Club for many years, and was a member of the Genesee Valley Club of Rochester, NY, until his death. Mr. Klein was an active member of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, participating in many trips to foreign countries. He was a past president of the Princeton Association of Central Connecticut, and a member of the Old Guard of West Hartford. Until illness curtailed his activities, he volunteered as a math tutor and in the English as a Second Language program. Surviving are his wife, Jean Jefferson Klein; a son, Keith Jefferson Klein and his wife, Linda, of Oklahoma City, OK; and two daughters, Catherine Klein of Chapel Hill, NC, and Laura Klein Voorhees and her husband, John Easton Voorhees, of Crestview Hills, KY; a brother-in-law, Charles Jefferson of Falls Church, VA; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Jenny Jefferson, of Annapolis, MD: and nine grandchildren. The Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Ave., 11 a.m., Friday, August 10, with the Rev. Gary Miller officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to the Asylum Hill Congregational Church or the Hartford Tennis Club.
