James SHAW Obituary

SHAW, James H. Jr. James H. Shaw Jr. (Jim) of Eastham, MA died peacefully on Wednesday, (February 16, 2011) at the age of 82 at Cape Cod Hospital. Jim was born in Matawan, New Jersey on January 29, 1929 to Josephine Larkin Shaw, and James H. Shaw, Sr. He attended Saint Mary's High School in South Amboy, NJ. He served in the US Army, and later attended the University Of Connecticut where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees. As an accomplished educator, he was the Chairman of the English Department at Bloomfield Connecticut High School. He later worked at CIGNA Insurance. He and his wife Mary MacKenzie Shaw raised their three children in Simsbury, CT before retiring to Cape Cod. Jim was a warm gentle person, who loved to laugh and loved to make others laugh. He was witty, charming, entertaining and had a great love of people. Many stories were swapped daily, both local and global, at the Hole In One Coffee Shop. A lover of language, he was an avid reader and completed many difficult crossword puzzles. Jim made many a person happy with his cooking skills. We will miss the soups, sauces and hash browns. Most of all Jim enjoyed the simplicity of seeing his family happy and having them by his side. Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary; his daughter Elizabeth (Lisa) of Orleans, MA; son James and his wife Lorna of Boston, MA., and Ian and his wife Tamsyn of Brewster, MA. He will be hugely missed by his five beautiful grandchildren, Madeleine and Delaney of Brewster, MA., James, Julia and Emma of Boston, MA., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the brother of Catherine Tomasello, Joan Cross, and David Shaw, all of Florida. Private services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Friends of the Eastham Public Library, P.O. Box 1025, Eastham, MA 02642.

Dear Mary,
I was so sorry to hear about your loss. Although I never met Jim, reading these wonderful tributes helped me learn about him. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts.

Mr. Shaw's Advanced Composition class for those of us in the class of 1969 was like a jolt of electricity. His wit and his iconoclasm challenged us to see writing as a craft we could emulate, an art to which we could aspire. He is always in my head as I teach my students at Trinity College. I will never forget him.

Sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved husband, father and grandfather. To me he was the greatest English teacher ever!! His humor, his ability to excite and motivate, his love of teaching were just a few of his wonderful traits. I think of him often. He made such a powerful impression on me.

May you keep him close in your heart.
