Joan Petano Obituary

PETANO, Joan Carol Joan Carol Petano, 63, of New Britain, passed away on Friday (October 24, 2008) at The Hospital of Central Connecticut with family at her side, after a courageous fight with lung cancer. Joan grew up in Newington, daughter of the late James and Bertha (Brooks) Petano. She was a resident of New Britain for 30 years. She had recently retired from The MDC in Hartford after 19 years of service as a Principal Account Clerk. Joan leaves behind her two brothers; Robert Petano of Newington, and Richard J. Petano and his wife May of Farmington; her nieces and nephews and their families, including her godson Richard T. Petano of Avon, goddaughter Bonnie Yackovetsky of Bozrah, James Petano of Terryville, Barbara Sewall of Whitman MA, David Petano of Enfield, Roberta Micale of Southington, and Thomas Petano of Newington. She also leaves her three lifetime friends Barbara, Sherrill and Donna, many dear friends who supported her during her illness, and several cousins. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Miriam Petano and her nephew Robert Petano Jr. Joan loved the beach, Cape Cod, and browsing craft shows. As a baby sister and aunt, she always had her family's affection. Her sense of fun, her charisma and her caring always led folks outside her family to want to be near her, talk to her and share a laugh. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, 9:15 a.m., from Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a mass of Christian burial, 10 a.m., at The Church of the Holy Spirit in Newington. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Britain. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m., at Newington Memorial. Memorial Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., Meriden, CT 06450. To share a memory with the family, please visit our website www. newingtonmemorial.com.

Joanie was a close co-worker and a friend of mine for nearly 20 years. She was a very nice person. I missed her after she left for her illness and feel badly about her passing and I will always miss her presence. She was too young to leave us. I'm very sorry she didn't get to enjoy all that she worked for all the years she worked hard towards her retirement. RIP Joanie

I was so sad to read of Joan's passing. It has been years since we saw each other, how quickly the time flies, from children to teens then to adults. I have fond memories of playing together on Parker, Basswood, Linwood Streets, and then of high school. My sincere sympathy to the Petano family, you all are in my prayers.

I was saddened to read of Joan's passing, which coincidently occurred the same week as another long-time Parker Street resident, Lou Mascolo (senior). Seems like only yesterday we were young teens hanging out there in the mid-late '50's. Such nice memories. God bless you all during this difficult time.
