John Burns Obituary

John Anthony Burns "Tony", 77, of Manchester, CT and Venice, FL passed away on May 22, 2015 unexpectedly at home. Tony was born in Waterbury, CT on March 23, 1938. Tony enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18 and served proudly for three years. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Connecticut State University and earned advanced degrees at the University of Connecticut. Retired from Middlesex Community College, Tony worked most of his career teaching Accounting and Tax. For many years, he was also actively involved in the 4Cs, the Congress of Connecticut Community Colleges. Anyone who knew Tony, knew that being a Marine, his garden, the beach, his wry sense of humor and the desire to see those he loved happy were the essence of who he was. His love of gardening was a true expression of his generosity of spirit. He nurtured and grew mountains of vegetables. Being a man of few words, he also nurtured and loved his family with actions of strength and support. His smiling, baby blue "Irish eyes" will be missed. Tony was "happily" married to Patricia (Perlotto) on October 24, 1964, they were married over 50 years. He is survived by Patricia, their three children and their families. Michael Burns and his wife, Bel, of Mill Valley, CA, Susan Burns and her partner, Rachael Cook, of Portland, OR, Megan DuBaldo and her husband, Donald, of Glastonbury, CT. He leaves behind seven grandchildren who adored their "Grumpa". Reese and Ryan Burns, Leone Cook, Madalena, Angalena, Cecelia and Anthony DuBaldo. Tony is also survived by his two brothers, Tom Burns, Chris Burns and one sister, Lee Nelson. He also leaves behind many friends and family members. Tony is preceded in death by his parents Margaret (Ashmore) and John Leo Burns. Calling hours will be Tuesday, May 26th from 5-8 p.m. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester, CT. A funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at St. Dunstan Church, 1345 Manchester Road, Glastonbury, CT on Wednesday, May 27th at 10 a.m. with a procession from John F. Tierney Funeral Home at 9:15 a.m. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, 1318 Hebron Ave, Glastonbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. For online condolences please visit www.tierneyfuneralhome.com.

Can't believe it's been 7 years since you left us. You continue to be in my daily prayers - still remember you sitting on the steps outside my condo when they were replacing our doors. RIP

I remember a trivia game we were playing as a team-John suggested we call ourselves "The Marines" - we wound up winning among several other groups after which we all five/fived one another. Quite a guy!

Pat, I roomed with Tony (and Jerry A. In Seth North) and was a Fraternity brother. What a great practical joker! He got me numerous times with his emphatic seriiousness( regarding a complete fabrication on his part) he will be missed by all of us!! My condolences, Steve Hubbard

Dear Pat,
Our deepest condolences to your entire family. We know Tony will be deeply missed. Gretchen & I only had the opportunity to meet Tony once during Sue and Rachael's union weekend in Portland almost five years ago, but we really enjoyed his company, "hanging out" with him and, of course, his "smiling" baby blue eyes! Our deepest sympathies to you all. With love, Greg Cook & Gretchen Luchsinger.

I had the pleasure and joy of working with Tony at Mxcc for many years and I cannot imagine what it would have been like without him. He was always able to make me laugh. While reading the paper this morning I came across a quote from Dr. Seuss that I would like to share. "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it
happened." I think Tony would have approved.

Tony and I worked at MCC from the late 60s until my retirement in 1979. He was a stellar person with a great sense of humor and always a twinkle in those blue eyes. He will be missed.
