John Deptula Obituary

John R. Deptula, 70, of Tolland, beloved husband of Catherine (Malatesta) Deptula, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2022. John was born in Manchester, CT on April 1, 1952, son of the late Helen (Rogalus) and John M. Deptula, and grew up in the Rockville/Vernon area. He graduated from Merrimack College in 1974, and the following year he obtained his CPA license. He worked in public accounting for several years, then spent the remainder of his career as a CPA in private industry. John spent many years successfully coaching Little League, girls' softball, and boys' and girls' basketball in Ellington where he and Cathy raised their family, and in Enfield as a coach with the youth hockey program. When he wasn't coaching, he was cheering on his children's teams, even driving throughout much of New England to cheer on his daughter Karyn's college softball team. He also enjoyed playing golf, Cape Cod vacations, and building model train layouts. He loved the Boston Red Sox, the New York Giants, the Boston Bruins, and the UConn men's and women's basketball teams, and suffered through UConn football. He was also a WWII and Civil War history buff, and could tell you anything you wanted to know about either conflict. John was a wonderful and devoted father to his sons Andy and his wife Allison, and Chris and his wife Caitlin, and his daughters Karyn Deptula, and Margaret Schmidt and her husband Michael. He leaves six grandchildren whom he adored: Madison, Kennedy, Johnny, Tommy, Teddy, and Elle. He also leaves several cousins. "Dad" was always ready with a witty one-liner, happy to drive to Boston in snowstorms to help dig out cars, reminded us that bills are best paid with a glass of Scotch, and was always a willing playmate, no matter the game or time of day. And we will miss his beautiful smile. At John's request, there will be no services. A private memorial will be held at a later date.

So sorry to hear of John´s passing. I roomed with John one year at Merrimack. We were both accounting majors and he was in many of my classes. He and I enjoyed bowling weekly and even contemplated both going out for the track team. I enjoyed my time with John. He played on our intramural basketball team. I know he enjoyed it when we were able to win our division. I have been meaning to look John up since I retired and so sorry to find out if his passing. My prayers for John and his family.

Living across the street from each other for decades made knowing John & Cathy easy and wonderful. Between us we had 4 Boys who spanned 4 years and they truly grew up together. What time & geography separated in the early 2000's, it brought back together a few years ago (when we realized that 8 miles isn't really that far). I cherish our many get togethers since then and will always remember John's sweet & gentle nature. I know that he has left a void & but I am certain that he will be alive for his precious grand children when Cathy, Andy, Chris, Karyn & Margaret share their fondest stories. You will be missed, John & I am here for you, Cathy. Love, jeanne

John was a wonderful guy! I thoroughly enjoyed working for him & with him at Heublein.

He had wonderful instincts about people. He always hired the best people. And I always valued his opinion.

It was always so very obvious how much he loved his family.

My most sincere condolences to Cathy & family. I know he will be sorely missed

May he Rest In Peace.

My brother Jonathan informed me of John´s passing this afternoon. John and I met when we worked together in Hartman´s grocery store in high school. We spent endless time playing sports table-top games at either my house or his. We lost touch after that when I moved away but said "hi" to one another through Jonathan who handled John and Cathy´s insurance over the years. "Deppy"..as he was known to my family was a wonderful guy..honest and a real straight shooter. I could tell back then that he had his life pretty planned out..develop a relationship with Cathy and become an accountant. I am pleased, but not at all surprised in reading his obituary that his life followed exactly that path.

I worked with John in public accounting and got to share his friendship for years following, golfing and fishing. His smile and wit were warmly received by all who shared his company. We have lost touch though the decades and I am sorry for your loss. His obituary was well written and memorializes the wonderful John Deptula, I had the pleasure and privilege of sharing some of life´s journey. May your knowledge that we grieve with you lessen your pain of loss. My sincere sympathy to all.

As my older"brother" for 52 years, He leaves a place in our family that no one else can ever fill. But he leaves us with his wonderful children and grandbabies to remind us of what a wonderful and loving father he truly was. We love you all.
