John Lumpkin Obituary

John Tavis Lumpkin, 35, of Middletown, passed away surrounded by family at his home on Saturday December 14, 2013. He was the husband of Kelly (Akins) Lumpkin, with whom he celebrated marriage on June 28, 2013. John was born in Greensboro, NC on August 30, 1978, one of two children to Thomas and Barbara (Matthies) Lumpkin. Raised in North Carolina, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps following graduation from high school. John proudly served his country for four years as an Infantry Rifleman with Gulf Company, 2nd Battalion/6th Marine Regiment, serving tours in Japan, South Korea and the Mediterranean, and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 2000. Upon receiving his degree in Engineering from Chippewa Valley, he worked as a CAD technician, most recently for ADS-Stormtech in Rocky Hill. He had a love for all animals, most especially his "fur kids", Dylan, Princess, Mr. Poo, and his angel, Quincy. An outdoors enthusiast, he enjoyed hiking, camping, golfing, running, and carried on his military skills by going target & skeet shooting. In addition to his wife, Kelly and his parents, he leaves his sister, Amy Marsh of NC; his mother and father-in-law, Lauren and Lee Akins and his brother-in-law, Ian Akins; his niece, Jordan Lumpkin; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Harvey and Josephine Matthies and Charles and Helen Lumpkin, and his nephew, Michael Scholten. A Mass in celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, December 20th at 12:00pm at Our Lady of Mercy Church, followed by military honors alongside the Farmington River. Family and friends may gather on Thursday evening, from 6-8 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St, Plainville. Those who wish may remember John and his love for animals with a contribution to their local humane society. For online expressions of sympathy, please visit www.BAILEY-FUNERALHOME.com
