QUAGLIA, John C., Sr.
John C. Quaglia Sr., 89, of Manchester, beloved husband of 63 years to Ruth (Hicking) Quaglia passed away Monday, (October 21, 2013) at home with his family at his side. John was born November 27, 1923 in Manchester, son of the late Domenico and Palmina (Lovisolo) Quaglia and was a lifelong resident. He was very proud of the time he spent in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the commissioning crew of the U.S.S. McDermut DD677. The ship went on to participate in many invasions in the Pacific, and the Philippine Islands earning 10 battle stars. He and Ruth attended many memorable U.S.S. McDermut ship reunions. After his honorable discharge from the service, he worked for 39 1/2 years at Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, retiring as a Material Lab Tester. He was very active in coaching and assisting teams in Little League, Midget Football, and Midget Basketball. He was a communicant of Church of The Assumption. In addition to Ruth his beloved wife, John is survived by his loving children, four sons, John C. Quaglia Jr., Joseph D. Quaglia and his wife, Susan, James P. Quaglia and his wife, Susan, Robert C. Quaglia, all of Manchester and a daughter, Rhonda McCarty and her husband, Peter of Coventry; nine loving grandchildren, six special great-grandchildren; a sister, Domenica Fike of Manchester and several nieces and nephews and their families. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Holmes Funeral Home 400 Main Street Manchester. Burial will follow with military honors in East Cemetery Manchester. Calling hours will be prior to the funeral service on Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
