Joseph W. Backus

Joseph W. Backus, 94, of Burlington, CT, passed away on April 28, 2016. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Gladys Scheidel Backus, of over 71 years. He was born in Burlington, CT and was predeceased by his father, John Backus, mother, Mary (Wagner) Backus, and sister, Elizabeth (Backus) Scheidel. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Joe was a passionate owner of his family business, Backus Power Equipment, for over 30 years. Once he retired, golf became a great pastime for him. Westwood Country Club was where he was a starter and raised the flag daily. Collecting stamps, coins, and baseball cards were a few of his many hobbies, along with woodworking out in his shop. Joe was a proud member of St. Stans and the Knights of Columbus, Council #3544, where he achieved the 3rd and 4th degree. He also held many offices with the Knights. Joe was proud to serve the U.S. Army, where he was decorated with the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and World War 2 Victory Medal. His honarable discharge was on February 14, 1946. Friends and family may visit Monday, May 2nd, at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville from 6-8pm. Funeral procession from The Ahern Funeral Home will be Tuesday, May 3rd at 9:15am followed by the Funeral Liturgy in St. Stanaslaus Church at 10:30am, located at 510 West Street, Bristol, CT. Military honors will be rendered at the church immediately following the Mass. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanaslaus Church, 510 West St., Bristol, CT 06010. A special thank you to the staff at The Pines in Bristol. Kim, Gayle, and all of the aids treated Joe with compassion and respect.
