Joseph Booth Obituary

Joseph Henry Booth, 96, of Farmington, CT passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 25, 2020, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 69 years, Gwyneth Edwards Booth. Born in Hartford, CT on September 22nd, 1923, he grew up in West Hartford and was a graduate of Hall High in 1941. Joe joined the army in 1943, serving in the 97th infantry division as a radio operator in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. He earned a victory medal, a good conduct medal, and three campaign ribbons for his service in three separate Theatres of Operation. Upon his return, he worked as a draftsman and estimator for City Iron and continued on with a long career at Shepard Steel until his retirement at age 65, when he pursued recreation as a full-time job. This life of recreation was filled with frequent weekend trips to their vacation home in Vermont with Gwyneth to spend time with dear friends. Surprisingly, their house in Connecticut is still standing. He was known as a legendary athlete, starting in high school when he broke the record for the 880-yard sprint. He enthusiastically spread his love of athletics to his friends, family, church members, and community members by acting as the self-appointed social coordinator, always organizing golf, tennis and volleyball leagues among others. More than his love for athletics, Joe was best known as the most loving, humble, generous, and thoughtful gentleman whose kindness made an impression on everyone who crossed his path. He was not only a wonderful father, husband, and friend; he was an inspiration to anyone who knew him. Joe was a valuable member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Avon, considered "The Mayor" by many, and served as a key figure in the design and building of the new location. He served on numerous committees, mentored many of the children, and as you can imagine, took the lead in starting a number of athletic leagues for the members. He is survived by his children, Robert and Diane Booth of Burlington, Marsha Kennedy of Burlington, Brenda and Mark Vigneault of Southington, and Tom and Nancy Booth of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren who loved him dearly. His family would like to take this opportunity to thank his many dedicated and loving caregivers and the hospice organization. There will be a celebration of Joe's life on Saturday, February 1st, at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church located at 867 West Avon Road, Avon. In lieu of flowers, please carry on Joe's legacy by performing a random act of kindness in his memory. Donations may be made to the Memorial United Methodist Church. Arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Homes, Inc., www.ahernfuneralhome.com.

Just made a trip up to Wilmington VT where we used to have a wonderful time playing tennis with Joe. He and his wife were such terrific people and neighbors. We think about them often.

So sorry to hear another of the Highlands parents is gone. I knew who Mr. Booth was from the neighborhood, but got to know what a great guy he was when I worked at Farmington Farms and he'd come in frequently to play tennis. He'd always stop to chat and we'd have a few laughs. Condolences to his whole family and may he rest in peace.

We had the privilege of participating in several of Joes tennis outings. We lived in Farmington for a short time but will always remember how welcome he and others made us feel. What a wonderful life he had. Karsonovich Family

Joe Booth could replace the word brother in the Bible as they have the same meaning. Absolutely none better in my lifetime.

What a genuine, caring, complete man! How many people like Joe can you hope to know? I am glad I met him in church and on the courts. We were just incredibly fortunate that Joe and Gwyn were in our lives, and always will be. Rev. Bob MacDonald
