Joseph Meny Obituary

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Joseph G. Meny, Jr. on Sunday August 22, 2021 in Hartford, CT. Joe passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved wife of 45 years and three children. Joe's persistent kindness and generosity were second only to his love for his family and friends. Joe was born on July 25, 1950 in Hartford to Joseph G. Meny, Sr. and Jeanette Butler Meny. He was a graduate of Northwest Catholic High School and Providence College. He continued his education at the University of Hartford, earning a Masters Degree in Public Administration. He began his career with Connecticut General in 1973, where he also met his wife on their first day of work. He retired from CIGNA in 2004 after a successful career as a National Account Executive. Not quite ready to retire completely, he went on to work for Lindberg and Ripple as a consultant until 2014. Joe developed close relationships with friends from Northwest Catholic, Providence College, CIGNA, and as a resident of West Hartford for 50 years. He loved family gatherings, relaxing on Cape Cod, all things Providence College, and playing golf. He hosted the annual McDermott Open golf tournament for his PC friends which was always a highlight of his year. Never afraid to play too much golf, he also organized an annual tournament for Northwest Catholic and West Hartford friends at his home on Cape Cod. Irish culture and music were a constant love in Joe's life and he was a member of the Irish American Club. Joe was an avid reader and book club devotee. He always accepted any opportunity to play cards with friends and enjoyed coaching his kids in youth sports for over 10 years. He was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Peter Claver Church. He is survived by his wife, Susan, with whom he cherished travelling, especially to the Cape, playing golf, and hosting gatherings with their friends and family. Joe was a loving father and grandfather and is survived by his three children, Kate Martin and her husband Brian, John Meny and his wife Jenn, and Eileen Meny. He always had a hug or special treat in hand for his five grandchildren, Eleanor, James, Felix, Josephine, and Charlie. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara O'Neill, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and Jerry Ouellette, sister-in-law, Anne Morley, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly. His family would like to thank the staff at St. Francis Hospital for the care he received prior to his passing. Relatives and friends may join the family for calling hours on Sunday August 29th from 4-7pm at Molloy Funeral Home (906 Farmington Ave, West Hartford) and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 30th at 10:00am at St. Peter Claver Church (47 Pleasant St, West Hartford). Masks are required at both events. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's name can be made to Food Share, 450 Woodland Ave. Bloomfield CT 06002, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis Tenn. 38105 or The Fund for Providence College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 1 Cunningham Square, Providence, Rhode Island 02918, please note that your gift is in memory of Joseph Meny '72. Susan
I recently learned about the passing of your husband. I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my husband Michael shortly after, in November 2021. Life is hard without him. Just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you.

A true gentleman

Dear Sue - I worked with Joe back in the early `80´s in Group Marketing. He was one of the nicest guys I´ve ever known. One of my fondest memories of him was when I was doing some consulting after my daughter was born and I brought her into the office while I attended a meeting. When I emerged from the meeting, there was Joe squatted down in front of her stroller tickling her foot, both of them smiling and laughing. One of the sweetest scenes ever, and so typical of him. I am so glad to have known him and send you my deepest sympathy at his passing.

Truly heartbreaking to hear the news about one of the greatest role models I have had the opportunity to grow up around. Uncle Joe was a great man. I always enjoyed visiting as a kid not only to see my cousins, but to enjoy breakfast the next morning that Uncle Joe would cook up for everyone in the house. He stood there for hours it seemed making sure everyone got fed. He was always in a good mood and smiling. He was the kind of man you wanted to grow up and be like. Uncle Joe played a big role in my life as a young man and will be missed dearly.

Joe was one of the nicest and kind individuals in the Class of 1968 at Northwest Catholic. He was a true gentleman in every respect, and will be missed by all who knew him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

We are so very sad to hear of Joe's passing. We can still remember all the good times at CIGNA (then CG), including volley ball games after work. Joe and Sue together were some of the nicest, kindest people you could ever meet. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
