Linda Veirs Obituary

Linda Windrow Veirs passed away in her home in North Granby, Connecticut, on January 16, 2024. Linda was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, October 23, 1938. She graduated from Centre College, Danville, Kentucky, and later earned a Master's degree in Library Science from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1962. She and James (Jim) Veirs were married in 1962 and later moved to Granby, Connecticut in 1970, where they raised two children, Helen Veirs Rice of Granby and Walter Veirs of London, UK. She was honored to be the admired grandmother of James Rice, Will Rice, Henry Rice, Sanna Veirs and Ian Veirs. She was the center piece of her close-knit family. Her wisdom, sympathy and joy were much sought after by her immediate family and her extensive relatives in Tennessee. She was always generous with her love, kindness, and enthusiasm. Linda was the head librarian for the East Granby Public Library for 15 years; her significant contribution to the new library completed in 2002 was recognized by the East Granby Lions Club by their naming Linda as the East Granby Citizen of the Year for 2002. She took great pride in the contribution of the new library to the community. She also was a past member of the Granby Ambulance Association, as well as active in the Granby Congregational Church. Linda and Jim enjoyed traveling to visit Walter and his family in London, trips to Tennessee, and seeing much of the west with James, Will, and Henry. Linda loved gardening and the outdoors. She was an avid enthusiast of fly fishing and though never boasting about it showed her expertise by out- fishing Jim at every opportunity. Memorials in her name are requested to be sent to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL, 36104, Granby Community Fund, PO Box 94, Granby, CT 06035 and Granby Ambulance Association, 1 Pegville Road, Granby, CT 06035. A memorial service is being planned and will be announced at a later date. Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home of Granby has care of the arrangements. She has joined the company of Heavenly angels, but I will always remember Linda as the earthly angel she was to my family. We were privileged to be "across the street" neighbors with Linda, Jim, Helen, and Walter in our first home in North Granby. As we bore and raised our little girls, Linda became that special person in their lives, whose home was always a warm, welcoming place to go when Mommy needed a hand. Linda´s kindness, generosity, fun-loving spirit, and unique Southern sense of humor brought so much joy to us in those years. To me as a young mother, she was an inspirational model of creativity, ingenuity, resourcefulness, and down-to-earth common sense. I will never forget the gift of having her in our lives and will always remember her with love and gratitude for the indelible impression she made on our hearts and souls.
