Maria A. Gomes

Maria "Alice" Gomes, 98, passed peacefully surrounded by family on May 19th. Alice was born on July 3, 1924, in New Bedford, MA, before moving to Madeira, Portugal at 14 months old, where she lived until 19. At that time she traveled on her own by boat back to America where she was reunited with her brothers, Cil and Louis. The trio referred to themselves as the "Three Musketeers" as they made their way through the new and exciting USA.

In July 1952, she married the absolute love of her life, Tony, and they spent 64 years together before his death in 2017. They had two boys, Gary and Greg, who added a wonderful daughter-in-law and devoted son-in-law, Christine and Craig, into their family.

After living in Connecticut for 58 years, she moved to New Jersey with Gary and Christine for the second and third loves of her life, her great-grandchildren, Tony and Vinny. While in New Jersey, she spent time with her grandchildren, Sarah and her husband Dan, and Stephen.

Alice was strong-willed, loving, and incredibly supportive. She was a terrific mom who was always involved with her children and found the opportunity to relive that later in life as an incredibly dedicated grandmother. She will always be known for making the best chocolate chip cookies and giving the warmest hugs and will be forever missed on Panini Sundays.

She was predeceased by her husband, Tony, and brothers, Cil, Louis, and Fernando. She is survived by her sister Dolores, sisters-in-law Rose and Mary, and many loved ones. Arrangements will be at a later date at the convenience of the family
