Maria Hatzikostas Obituary



Maria E. Hatzikostas (Hadzigeorgiou), 90 of Rocky Hill, beloved wife of the late Emanuel G. Hatzikostas died peacefully on Saturday (March 1). She was born May 10, 1923 in Yennadi, Rhodes, Greece the daughter of Merkourio and Irene Hadzigeorgiou. She, her husband and two young children immigrated from Greece in 1956 and began their quest to fulfill their vision of the American dream. They eventually started successful businesses of their own, including The Hatzikostas Farm & Egg Company, Colchester, CT and Manny's Pizza, Pawcatuck, CT. They were happiest working alongside each other during those years. She was devoted to her faith and a dedicated member of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. "Yiayia" will be missed by those who knew her, especially her adoring family who greatly loved, respected and cherished her. She is survived by her son George E. Hatzikostas and his wife Theresa of Rocky Hill, her son Michael E. Hatzikostas of Stonington and daughter Irene Vasilakis of Cromwell; a sister Despina Milios of Yennadi, Greece; two brothers, George H. Georges of New York and Stanley H. Georges and his wife Kathy of Ellington, sisters-in-law Sevasti Hadzigeorge and Katina Hatzikostas of Greece; Grandchildren, Emanuel M. Hatzikostas and his wife Erin of Marlborough, Maria Taylor and her husband William A. of Cromwell, Sophia Figueroa and her husband Joshua of Cromwell, Christina Lanouette and her husband Jay Jr. of Waterbury, Melitsa Vasilakis of Cromwell, Stephanie and Emanuel G. Hatzikostas of Rocky Hill; great-grandchildren, Ella Maria and Michael E. Hatzikostas, Olivia Tsambika & Georgiana Taylor, Jaxon Emanuel Figueroa; and a great many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by her sisters-in-law, Sevasti H. Georges, Maria Mangafas and brothers-in-law, Kostas Hatzikostas and Elefterios Hatzikostas. The funeral will be held on Friday March 7th at 11 a.m. at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 433 Fairfield Ave., Hartford. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday 5-8 p.m. at Brooklawn Funeral Home 511 Brook St., Rocky Hill where Trisagion will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in her honor to Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
