Marian Sorbo Obituary

Marian Klaje Sorbo, age 91, passed away peacefully at her home September 30, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 12, 1930, to Helen and Paul Klaje in New Britain, CT. The baby of the family, she was adored by her three siblings, Florence Zup, Paul Klaje, and Helen Ellert, all who predeceased her. She married the love of her life, Paul Joseph Sorbo in May of 1952 who preceded her in death in 2006. Their devotion to each other was always evident and their marriage was a model for the family. A Windsor resident for 64 years, she established deep roots while developing countless close friends and rewarding relationships, all who were familiar with her heartfelt kindness and genuine concern for others as well as her love of singing songs of her generation and ice cream of all flavors! Marian is survived by her daughter and husband, Kathleen and David Furie of Windsor, CT; her three sons and their wives Paul and Dena Sorbo of Mountain View, CA, Thomas and Elizabeth Sorbo of Sudbury, MA and John and Tina Sorbo of Delmar, NY; her eight grandchildren Amanda Ndaw and husband Aziz, Sarah Furie, Joseph Sorbo and wife Stephanie, Samuel Sorbo and wife Debora, Paul, Grant, Jack and Brett Sorbo; and her six great grandchildren Eddy, Charley, Holly, Jenny, Moussa and Astou; her dear sister-in-law Susan Slade of Groton, MA and many nieces and nephews. Marian was born and raised in New Britain, CT and graduated from New Britain High School with the class of 1948. She worked at the New Britain Public School system and Litchfield High School as a secretary in her young life and then for many years as an administrative assistant for Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Windsor. But first and foremost, Marian was a dedicated mother. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them and loved their spouses. She cherished her role as grandmother and eventually great grandmother. Marian was an active member of the Girl Scouts of CT for over 50 years, she was a member of the St. Joseph Church Prayer Shawl Ministry and was a steadfast supporter of the Windsor Library Association, Friends of Northwest Park, and the Windsor High School Art Department. In 2020, Marian received the Bridge Builder Award given by the Windsor Human Relations Commission in recognition of her fostering greater trust, understanding and solidarity across the full spectrum of the town's racial, ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity areas. She was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of Windsor/Windsor Locks, where she actively maintained many worldwide relationships that she and her husband began during his tenure as a District Governor. Rotary International encourages its members to "Look Beyond Yourself" and Marian endeavored to meet that challenge every day of her life. Her family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, from 4–7 PM, at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor. Family and friends may gather on Thursday, October 6 at 10:00 AM at Carmon Windsor Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Damien of Molokai Parish–St. Joseph Church, 1747 Poquonock Avenue, Windsor. Burial will follow with her family in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Windsor. For online condolences please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Windsor Library Association (https://www.wlact.org) or the Rotary Foundation (https://www.rotary.org/en/about-rotary/rotary-foundation).
The funeral mass will be recorded and posted on the Carmon Funeral Home website later in the day, Thursday, October 6, 2022.

What important friends Marian and Paul were to my parents, Ed and Shirley Biewald! I always appreciated her kindness and positive energy. Strange to be aging and so aware of deaths and births of generations before, of and after mine.

Marian was a great lady and a great Rotarian. She continued the legacy of her late husband and past district governor, Paul Sorbo by attending many Rotary International events. It was wonderful to witness her enthusiasm at local, regional and national events. Whenever there was some form of volunteer need in Windsor, Marion was always there. I am sorry that I could not attend the family gathering on October 6th, but I felt that the best way to honor Marian's life and work was to volunteer at the Historical Society's tag sale that was taking place at the same time. I know Marian would have loved to be there as well.

My sincere condolences to the Sorbo family. I met Miriam recently during the initial phase of her illness so I only knew her for a short time. But her spirit was vibrant along with her wit!! It was heartwarming to see such a loving family taking great care of their mom/grandmother!! May she Rest In Peace.

My late husband, Ray Chelte, was, like Paul Sorbo, a Past District Governor. After one wonderful Rotary get-together at the Sorbos' house, I will always remember Marian serenading us as we left with her rendition of "Look Beyond Yourself," the theme for Paul's District Governor tenure that year. Marian was always gracious and kind. I will always remember the beautiful magnets that she painted for Paul's DG year. My deepest sympathies to all of you.
