Mary C. Pike, 94, of Granby, beloved wife for 52 years of the late Roscoe Pike, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 22, 2023, in Granby. Born in North Conway, NH on May 11, 1928, daughter of the late Frederick and Manora (Tuttle) Clayton, she was raised in Madison, NH and was a graduate of Madison High School.
After high school, Mary continued her education at the University of New Hampshire where she studied occupational therapy. While at UNH, Mary met Roscoe Pike and after her graduation the couple married on June 2, 1951. Shortly after their wedding, they moved to
Cambridge, MA where Roscoe had been accepted into a doctorate program at MIT. After receiving his Ph.D., Mary and Roscoe moved to
Grand Island, NY where Roscoe had accepted a position as a research chemist at Union Carbide. Mary and Roscoe started a family and later moved to
Holden, MA and then to Simsbury where they lived for many years. Once Mary's children were in school, she returned to work as an occupational therapist at the Simsbury Public Schools and later at the Enfield Public Schools where she worked until her retirement.
While her children were growing up, Mary was very involved in all of their activities. She enjoyed taking them ice skating in the winter, camping in the summer, and she shared her love of the ocean with them by taking them to Cape Cod and to Florida every opportunity she had. Her children fondly remember the family tent trailer that accompanied them on many vacations to Florida, State parks, and on camping trips throughout the Northeast.
Mary's faith was a big part of her life since she was a child. While living in Simsbury, the family worshiped at Covenant Presbyterian Church/The Barn where Mary sang in the choir and played in the hand bell choir for many years. After moving to Granby and later to Avon, Mary joined Valley Community Baptist Church in Avon.
Mary was a natural musician. She played the flute, enjoyed line dancing over the years, and listening to her favorite music. In her spare time, she also enjoyed sewing and knitting, shopping, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved to travel and took many memorable trips with her husband both domestically and internationally including cruises, tours throughout Europe, and to Australia. After she and her husband retired, Mary and Roscoe spent several months each year at their home on the Cape in Harwich, MA where they shared many seasons enjoying the beach with family and friends.
She leaves five children, Debra Pike and her husband, James Beckenbaugh of Duncansville, PA, David Pike and his partner, Linda Cook of
Gloucester, MA, Bruce Pike and his wife Elena of Flourtown, PA, Brian Pike and his wife Patti of
Rockport, MA, and Diane Oates and her husband Aaron of East Granby; eight grandchildren, Amanda Wasser and her husband Scott of Greenlane, PA, Leigh-Anne Richter and her husband Nick of
