“To Grandmother’s House We Go” In memory of Mary G. Roberts

Over on Anderson, the Gladis family

great grandma and grandpa had many

Joe, Mike, John, Steve, Ed

Mary, Helen and Ann

And then Mary met Fred.

Mary and Fred had their own group of six

Pranksters and jokesters them all

Each of them wed

Moved out on their own

Then Mary moved on to Jacob.

By Bristol Pizza and up Jacob Street

to grandmother’s house we go

Coming together

Grandma’s decedents

Babies and children galore

Up the front stairs and around the corner

Into grandma’s place we go

It’s Christmas morning

Fights over hangers

Many presents under the tree

First and foremost is family pictures

Gram calls us to the fireplace

Is anyone hiding?

Are your shoes shined, now smile

And grandma will capture your feet.

Into the kitchen we must hurry

There’s lots of food prepared

Three tables or four?

Where’s the chairs? We need more!

And table clothes already pressed

Out of the kitchen to the dining room

All the food must go

Pickles and olives

Celery, cream cheese

Did anyone do a taste test?

Gram’s holiday dinner is ready

The potatoes now on the floor (thanks Scott)

The coleslaw’s prepared

There’s roast beef and ham

And the gravy is set to go

Now clear the table, time for the dishes

Everybody grab a plate

Dessert’s still to follow

Jell-O with cream cheese

Chocolate chip cookies and brownies

Dinners now over and games begun

Where’s the box of Russell Stovers?

Pink candies and mints

Dried figs and dates

Who stole the nut cracker?

Out on the porch, lincoln logs and cars

Gram’s time with the children

Her plants all around

Gram says “And how”

They do get big so quick

Down Jacob Street and by Bristol Pizza

The day has quickly ended

Say goodbye to the bird

And look up in the window

Grandma is waving to us.

By Bristol Pizza and up Jacob Street

to grandmother’s house we go

We’re so excited

A night out for parents

We’ll all play cards for a nickel

In the back up the spiral stairway

I hear the bird going tweet

Strawberry bubble baths

Cartoons in color

It’s so hard to wait

High School Reunions for our parents

At grandmas we do stay

Shrimp cocktails and lettuce

Dried beef on bread

Chocolate chip cookies for dessert

Out of the kitchen get ready for bed

The evening quickly passed

Two on the couches

Two sharing a bed

It’s Scott, Kelly, Donna and Dawn

Plenty of play time, it’s time for bed

Stop your horsing around

I told you no horseplay

A gentle reminder

Ow, does anyone think that is gentle?

Saturday morning we do awake

Syrup and Waffles for breakfast

But now it’s time

To walk downtown

For grandma’s hair appointment

It’s ‘88 and Grandma’s a movin’

To Delorenzo’s Towers we go

Who’s gonna carry

the bed and the dresser?

The couch goes out the window

Go over on West Street and up North Main

The building that’s red and blue

Who’s gonna unpack

The Hummels and birds

Into the hutch that’s brand new

Up the elevator, off at five

Gram’s place is on the left

New furniture

Curtains and bedding

Where are Steve, Jim, Bill, and Fred?

The phone calls continue from the Towers

From Gram every Sunday night

She knows all our birthdays

Plus every phone number

And attends every event

Lunches at Riverside or Bristol Panda

So much to catch up on

Seventeen grandchildren

Never ending great grandchildren

What number are we on?

Yearly birthday parties for grandma

To a daughters’ house we go

Gladys or Mary’s

Or rent a hall

Since now there’s 80 in all.

We’re all at Delorenzo for Gram’s 85th

She comes in and yells surprise

It was her own party

But she knew it was coming

Off goes the alarm, is the cake on fire?

Over at Sheridan we all did gather

For Hawaiian shirt picnics

Holiday sing a longs

Hamburger, hot dogs

Wow did the years pass by us.

What will we remember from all the years

Grandma smiling so bright

Her soft cheeks awaiting

The smell of her powder

And grandma waving goodnight.

Doris and Bill, you have both been such good and caring children. I always knew that if it was Thursday, it was visit the mothers' day. Bill, I know that no matter your own age, the loss of your mother hurts none the less. We are sad for your loss.
