Michael Lombardo Obituary

Michael Lombardo, 81, of Portland, devoted husband of Mary (Kelly) Lombardo for 53 years, passed in peace on Monday, April 26, 2021 with his wife and three daughters by his side. Michael was born in Sicily, Italy, son of the late Santo and Giovannia (Amodio) Lombardo and emigrated to America at the age of seven. He graduated from Bulkeley High School, Class of 1958. Michael was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was a founding member of Our Lady of Peace Church, East Hartford where he served as lector and was involved in numerous parish functions. Michael was a faithful member of the Church in each of the communities where he resided. Prior to his retirement, he worked as an electrician for Northeast Utilities for 37 years. Michael was an avid sports fan; an enthusiast of the Boston Red Sox, UConn women's basketball, New York Jets, and the Hartford Whalers. He took great pride in his lawn and home projects and could often be found under a car, at his work bench, building a deck or manicuring his lawn. Michael would drop anything to help a neighbor or his family with their home projects. His greatest accomplishment, however, were his three daughters as evidenced by the active and loving role he took in each of their lives. Anyone who knew Michael could see he had tremendous pride for his 11 grandchildren and enjoyed cheering for them on the baseball, soccer or lacrosse fields, wrestling mat, basketball court, swimming pool, or at a dance recital. Throughout his life, Michael was known for his quiet nature, gentle demeanor, kind smile, and admired for his skills and work ethic. Michael will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Mary; daughters, Eileen Moynihan and her husband Patrick of Portland, Katie Stein and her husband Jonathan of Madison, Lauren Kasperowski and her husband Derrick of Portland. He will also be dearly missed by his 11 grandchildren who were the light of his life: Patrick, Riley, Quinn and Ronan Moynihan; Jack, Sam, Noah and Max Stein; and Mary, Kevin and Megan Kasperowski. He leaves behind his loving sisters Lucy Motta and the late John Motta of Wethersfield, Anne Giuliano and her husband Vincent of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. His children and grandchildren will forever be grateful for the value of faith and family that he and Mary instilled. Calling Hours will be held on Friday, April 30, 2021 at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown from 4 to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 10 AM at the Church of Saint Mary, 51 Freestone Avenue, Portland. Friends and family are invited to go directly to church on Saturday morning. Burial with military honors will follow at the Swedish Cemetery, High Street in Portland. The service will also be live streamed on https://stmaryportlandct.org/ Those who wish, may send memorial contributions in his name to the Church of Saint Mary, 51 Freestone Avenue in Portland. Dear Mary, Eileen, Katie and Lauren,
As we remember Michael with love, we're comforted with warm memories that bring many smiles during this sad time. Michael was always there when we so often needed help. He fixed our lemon of a Fiat so many time we thought about giving him a room of his own. Michael helped so many others because he was blessed with a generosity of spirit. In his immense love for his family, he was a role model for anyone and everyone. Michael has more than earned his eternal rest. We are holding you all in our hearts and sending you our love and deepest sympathy.

Katie & Family,
I'd like to share my condolences in person, but my schedule won't allow it this weekend. I remember your dad as a kind and welcoming presence with a great smile. Coming from a house of boys, I recall feeling temporarily sorry for him as the father of three pretty girls whenever my buddies and I would come over to your house in high school. That feeling would disappear after shaking his hand and looking him in the eye. He was so comfortable in his skin and it was blatantly obvious that you, Eileen, Lauren, and your mother were the center of his universe...a guy's guy in a house full of females...God bless him! My prayer is that you all are comforted by the shared memories and the lessons he taught. Perhaps the greatest one of all -- how to live a full life and love one's family. Let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Michael was such a dear friend who I have known over 50 years. He is my family. I met him when I was eleven when he and Mary moved right next door to us in East Hartford. We had a wonderful friendship through the years, and our Italian heritage always made us proud. He will be so missed, especially by his beautiful family. I will miss visiting him and talking about the old days in East Hartford. To the entire Lombardo family- my deepest sympathy to all of you, and may the beautiful memories of Michael stay with you, especially at this difficult time.
