Michael Stavola Obituary

STAVOLA, Michael J. Michael John Stavola, 78, of Wethersfield, beloved husband of Elizabeth (Atkins) "Betty" Stavola, died peacefully at home, Thursday (August 10, 2006). Born in Hartford to Michael and Rose Stavola on March 7, 1928, Michael graduated from Bulkeley High School and went on to serve proudly in the U.S. Navy from 1947 to 1952. He then worked for Northeast Utilities, retiring after 37 years. Michael, who lived in Wethersfield most of his life, cherished the love of his wife, family and friends and placed great value on spending time with them all. He was most proud of his six children who have grown to be successful in their careers and lives. He instilled in them a strong work ethic and a strong sense of family by which they conduct their lives today. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons and their wives: Michael and Jane; John and Rose; James and Kathy; and Thomas and Laura; his daughters: Rosanne and Sandra; and his nine grandchildren: Kate Sullivan, Jacqueline Parker, Ryan Theodores, Michael Ruetz, and Michelle, Alyssa, Erica, Jim Jr., and Nicole Stavola. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Larson, and Jean Stavola. He was predeceased by his brothers Frank, John, Jim, Thomas, and Jack Stavola, and his former wife, Theresa. Also joining the family in mourning are Betty's children Suzan, Salvatore, Joseph and Michael Bibisi, and grandchildren Joseph, Janine, Meagan, Molly, Daniel, Gregory, Blake, and Brooke Bibisi; former son-in-law Jim Ruetz and many life-long friends. His memorial service will be held Sunday, August 20, at 2 p.m. at the Church of St. Andrew The Apostle, 331 Orchard St., Rocky Hill, with the Rev. William Veinot officiating. There are no calling hours and burial is private at Rose Hill Cemetery in Rocky Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNA Health Care, c/o Hope Team, 103 Woodland St., Hartford, CT 06105.

I am very sorry for your loss. Our family saw the article in the Courant. While we don't know each other these days, the names struck a chord, because we are also of the broader Hartford Stavola clan, and the family names from the 20s-30s are identical. Yor relative, Michael Stavola, looks similar to my grandfather, Francis Stavola, one of many children of Gaetano Stavola, also of Hartford. Maybe they were cousins. We've lost many of these beloved Stavola men and women in the last decade, and we miss them, but we try to celebrate the vividness of their lives and their contribution to our family character.
