Michael Ira Wallans, of North Carolina and formerly of West Hartford, passed away on Wednesday, March 15 after a six-year battle with cancer. He was born January 18, 1947 in Springfield, MA to the lateHelen and Samuel Wallans. The family moved to Hartford, CT in 1953 and Michael graduated from Weaver High School in 1965 and then from Bates College in 1969. He taught biology at Hartford High School for eight years and then taught biology in the College of Basic Studies at the University of Hartford for another eight years. After relocating to the west coast of Florida in 1984, he worked for the state of Florida until retirement. His last position was Director of the Environmental Health Department for Florida's Lee county. He leaves his wife of 46 years, Marty of North Carolina, whom he met at Bates, and his sister, Janet, of Hartford. On Sunday, March 19 at 12:15 p.m. there will be a Memorial Service for Michael at the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West hartford, CT. Shiva will be observed beginning on Monday, March 20 from 6:00-8:00 p.m at the home of Janet Wallans. With a minyan at 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 21 and 22 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to the emanuel Synagogue, the jewish Federation of Greater hartford or the American Cancer Society
