Paul Cruikshank Obituary

Paul Fessenden Cruikshank Jr. of Bloomfield, CT. 1930-2023

"Pete" was born in Washington, CT to Paul and Edith Cruikshank in 1930, joining three sisters. Pete graduated from Exeter Academy and Yale. At College, he played hockey, and with his team, went to the NCAA tournament in 1952, playing goalie. During college, Pete solidified his desire to work in the railroad industry and worked as a laborer on railroads during the summers. Upon graduation, Pete began work on the Great Northern Railroad, headquartered in St. Paul. The fall brought a call to military service. Pete served three years in the Navy. During his time in the service, he married Alice Wayland, of Waterbury, CT in 1954. In 1956, he returned to The Great Northern in Spokane, WA assuming greater responsibilities, he served in several Western states and Texas. He spent 2 years in Washington, DC, with a quasi-governmental organization which created Conrail. Back to railroading, Pete completed his career in that industry with the Milwaukee Rd. in Chicago. Pete served on the boards of several schools and environmental organizations, including a local school board in Winnetka, IL and as Chair of the Board of McCormick Seminary, Chicago. He also spent hundreds of hours doing research for a book on the Birds of Peru. He was elected President of the Village Council of Winnetka. Pete leaves his wife, Alice, sons Robert and Donald, daughters Carol and Lynn, six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
