Paul Norman Obituary

Dr. Paul Stuart Norman passed away peacefully at his Manchester home on October 21, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 9, 1930, in Springfield, MA, Paul lived a long and fulfilling life marked by love, dedication, and service.

Paul is predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Arlene Zarchen Norman; his younger brother, Michael Norman; his nephew, Ben Norman; and his parents, Samuel and Evelyn Cohen Norman. He is survived by his three children, David Norman (Joann) of Westbrook, CT, Tom Norman (MaryBeth), of South Windsor, CT, and Emily Norman Bernard, of Lenox, MA. Paul and Arlene's legacy lives on through their six cherished grandchildren, Erin (Randy), Ashley (Jose), Brianna (Jeremiah), Sarah (Steve), Olivia (Sam), and Lyle. Family was the cornerstone of Paul's life, and he took immense joy in spending time and creating memories with his loved ones.

A man of great intellect, Paul's educational journey began at Trinity College, Hartford, and culminated at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. Following his graduation, he completed his internship at St Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT, and his residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and Boston City Hospital in Boston and Yale-New Haven Hospital, specializing in Otolaryngology.

In 1963, Dr. Norman opened his private practice in Ear, Nose, and Throat in Manchester, CT. His dedication and commitment to his profession led to the expansion of his practice, forming the Ear, Nose, and Throat Group with offices in both Manchester and Vernon, CT. Throughout his illustrious medical career, Paul held prestigious positions such as the President of the Manchester Memorial Hospital Medical Staff and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. His service extended beyond his immediate community as he served as a Medical Physician and Captain in the US Army during the Korean War (1957-1959) stationed at Fort Polk (now Fort Johnson) in Louisiana.

Paul was a man of many interests. His love for the outdoors saw him enjoy tennis, golf, hiking and skiing well into his mid-80s. He and Arlene built a home in Winhall, Vermont, creating a trove of treasured memories for their family and friends. Paul led the Norman tradition of participating in the Manchester Road Race on Thanksgiving Day, a testament to his love for community and tradition. His other interests included playing bridge, winning many tournaments across CT with Arlene. Paul also developed a passion for playing the piano in his 70s. An ardent reader, he had an affinity for suspense and murder mysteries, espionage novels, and historical non-fiction. Paul and Arlene travelled extensively with trips to Europe, Japan, China, Israel, Australia and New Zealand. They were also passionate about supporting the arts and enjoyed attending the theater, symphony, museums and art galleries. Paul and Arlene were also members of Temple Beth Shalom in Manchester for more than 60 years.

Loving, thoughtful, and selfless are words that best describe Paul. He was a man who put others before himself, always seeking to make a positive impact in the lives of those around him. Paul's life was a testament to his belief in honesty, integrity, and the importance of family traditions. He leaves behind a legacy of love and service, inspiring all who knew him.

In remembering Paul, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by dedication, love, and tireless service to his family, profession, and community. His memory will continue to inspire and guide all who knew and loved him.
