Phyllis Vignone Obituary

Phyllis Tryon Vignone, of Palm Harbor, Florida, formerly of Farmington and Avon, passed away March 24 at the age of 98 surrounded by her family. Born July 26, 1922 in Hartford, Connecticut, she was the daughter of Phillip Tryon and Annette Connor Tryon. In spite of growing up during the depression, she embraced living life with joy. After graduating from Bulkeley High School in 1939, Phyllis went to work for the Hartford Housing Authority where she met her future husband, Prosper J. Vignone. During WWII, while her husband served in the United States Army, Phyllis also contributed to the war effort by working for the Quartermaster General where she received a commendation. She also served as a neighborhood air-raid warden. In the years following the war, the couple went on to raise three children. In addition, Phyllis served as vice president and bookkeeper of the P.J. Vignone Construction Company and volunteered for numerous organizations including the PTA where she served as president, Booster Club, Girl Scouts, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society. After her husband died in 1972, Phyllis began working at the Holy Family Monastery in West Hartford. Phyllis loved to entertain and often brought family and friends together for parties, barbecues, card games, and holiday celebrations. She also loved the performing arts and never missed an opportunity to attend a play, an opera, or an outdoor concert with friends. She was a long-time member of Wethersfield Country Club where she enjoyed playing many rounds of golf and also served as Ladies Division Chairman. A club master in the American Contract Bridge League, Phyllis enjoyed playing bridge at Farmington Woods in Avon until she moved to Stratford Court in Palm Harbor, Florida where she continued her passion for bridge, playing four to five times a week. She especially enjoyed cherished visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Phyllis was a communicant at St. Patrick's Church in Farmington. She is survived by her three children: Prosper "Chip" Vignone and his wife Susan of Farmington, Connecticut, Leslie Vann and her husband Paul of Tampa, Florida, and Susan Hunter and her husband Charles of Idaho Falls, Idaho; five grandchildren, Prosper James Vignone, Stephanie Vann Brown, Craig Vignone, Amy Hunter, and Ryan Hunter; and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Phillip and Annette Tryon; brother, Edward Tryon; and husband, Prosper Vignone. A graveside ceremony will be held under the direction of The Ahern Funeral Home on Monday, March 29, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at Riverside Cemetery, 160 Garden St., Farmington, Connecticut. A Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, be kind and do something that enriches someone else's life. Gigi - you were a hallmark of elegance and grace. I'm so fortunate to have known you and to have married into the Vignone family where your wit and strength shine through the generations. My fondest memory together was going to see "It's a Wonderful Life" at the theater in Tampa just before Christmas. I had never seen the movie before but it was a favorite of Prosper's, having grown up watching it. It was such a beautiful setting and a special story and I think it so perfectly reflects the wonderful life you lived, filled with loving family and friends. We will miss you. xoxo Alexa

As a child living across the country from my grandma, I grew up thinking that the sophistication and class that I could sense but not label when we visited each summer were a function of her being my “Connecticut Grandma.” I later came to realize that while her personality was definitely sprinkled, or perhaps doused, with “New Englandness,” her most notable attributes were a function of her and not her location.
I could always feel how proud she was of my accomplishments, especially the four little people whom, I am sure, both she and I consider my greatest accomplishments. I loved hearing her stories about the lives and livelihoods of grandmothers who immigrated from Ireland or great grandfathers lost at sea. As I heard her tell stories of her work during the war it was clear how much she valued being part of things that matter.
I am forever grateful that my children had the chance to know and love her and for the many years we had to create memories together. Love you Grandma.

Wow, what a long and fulfilling life Mrs. Vignone had! I don’t know when this picture was taken, but it’s the same lovely memory I have of her when I was at her home while she and my mom played canasta with the rest of their friends. She was always smiling and cheerful, and shared stories of her family. May she Rest In Peace.

When I was a child, my family lived across the country from my grandma. We would fly to Connecticut to see her and the rest of the family every other summer. I remember grandma always having blueberry coffee cake waiting for us when we got to her house. It was the best! I also remember having a kindred night owl spirit with her. Some nights while we were staying with her, I would be sitting in the kitchen banquette reading when she would start vacuuming around 2:00am. We would smile at each other and then go about what we were doing.

I remember a story she told me from her youth. She was at the beach with a girlfriend when she was in her late teens. She noticed some boys looking at them and thought they were cute. The boys finally walked over and asked if they could take a picture of my grandma. She was very flattered until she heard them say they had never seen so many freckles on a person before. I think she told me because I got her freckles!

I love you grandma and am so grateful to have had you here for so long! I hope your reunion with grandpa went well!

Grandma, you've been an inspiration. I have long admired how you approached life, balancing realism and optimism, growing stronger from adversity, and seeking knowledge and personal growth well into your 90s. There are far too many fond childhood memories to recount in this space, but our St. Patrick's Day parade "dates" and your annual Christmas Eve celebrations are among my favorites. I was lucky to know you for many years of my adult life as well, which allowed me to appreciate you on a different level. You were supportive and always wanted the best for me...which occasionally manifested in attempts to identify suitable women for me to date. While those matchmaking attempts may have failed, Alexa and I were incredibly fortunate to have you together with the whole family at our wedding just shy of your 95th birthday. We aspire to lives as full and enriched as yours and to make others feel special as you did.

Grandma, you are simply amazing! There is really no other way to describe it. I will miss your stories about your life and especially your love story about Grandpa. I smile thinking about you being reunited with him again. He has been waiting for you for such a long time and I am certain he is not letting you out of his embrace again. I will miss you beating me in cards . . . EVERY TIME!!! And that little subtle smile after you win. I will miss your laughter after telling your favorite jokes. I can remember one joke at a time, but you could literally have done an entire stand-up comedy show. When you walk into a room, everyone just stares at your beauty and style. You dress to impress . . . every time you enter a room or even just walk downstairs at mom’s house. I will always remember your 90th birthday celebration surprise fashion show when the family showed off your fancy Saturday night dresses. You’ve had style and grace your entire life. I will miss you so much. I love you Grandma.

My grandmother would often ask me to help with odd jobs both at her house on Skyline Drive and later at her Condo in Farmington Woods. While I was always happy to help in anyway I could scheduling a time when she was free could prove difficult. It was rather embarrassing to a man in his twenties to find his grandmother kept a more robust social schedule than he did. A request to change a light bulb or bring in the patio furniture might be fulfilled weeks later as grandma had something planned every evening- dinner, a show, cards, etc. I was the one looking to fill my free time. She maximized her’s.
