BERLIN, Richard D., M.D Dr. Richard D. Berlin M.D., Associate Dean for Research, Planning and Coordination and Chairman of the Cell Biology Department at The University of Connecticut Health Center, died Sunday, (February 26, 2006). His cherished wife Susan survives him along with his children, Richard, Joy Newton and her husband Glenn, Ralph, Robert and grandson Foster Newton. Dr. Berlin, a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, was an accomplished scholar and medical researcher with a boundless intellectual curiosity and joy of learning. He is remembered by his family as a passionate student of life forever surrounded by books, projects and experiments. After completing his residency at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Berlin returned to Harvard Medical School as an associate professor in the Department of Physiology. In 1973 he joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut Health Center as Chairman of the Physiology Department (now Cell Biology) and in 1991 was appointed Associate Dean to enhance the research efforts of the UCONN Health Center. In his own words his most rewarding accomplishment was, "to have been part of a young institution, and to have contributed to its growth and quality." The family would like to express special gratitude to Dr. Pramod Srivastava for his heartfelt friendship, Dr. Robert Siegel and his colleagues at Hartford Hospital for their exceptional care, and to Dr. Peter Deckers for his friendship, support and partnership through the years and during this difficult time.
