Richard Jones Obituary

Richard R. Jones embarked on his final voyage on December 24, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He courageously fought a 5-year battle with stage 4 cancer which did not slow him down.

Richard was born on December 18, 1937 in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late William Robert and Mary Elizabeth Levan Jones. He is survived by his loving wife and teammate, Marcia C. Reiley.

Richard is survived by his children, Karen Jones Legault (Michael Legault), Douglas Jones (Kim Flowers), Bryan Jones (Marianne Gally Jones); stepchildren Thomas Reiley (Diane Kittle), Jennifer Reiley Young (Phil Young), MaryBeth Reiley Norman (Thomas Norman) and Matthew Reiley (Marcia De La Garza); grandchildren Justin, Nathan and Kevin Legault, Jennifer Nash-Jones, Tyler and Connor Jones and Sarah and Olivia Norman.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert E. Jones and leaves behind his sister-in-law, Joanne Jones, nephew David Jones (Kim Flores), Beth Jones Bruchnak (Kirk Bruchnak) and Carolyn Jones Deal (Eddie Deal); as well as a sister-in-law, Roberta Moyer Gorman (late Ed Gorman), niece and nephews Ed, Andy (Julie) and Jeff (Deborah) Gorman and Jen Gorman Williams (Ben); and another sister-in-law, Lois Anderson, together with several nieces and nephews.

He also leaves behind a great-grandson, Jason Jacobs. Richard was also predeceased by his first wife Constance Moyer Jones and his son David W. Jones.

He leaves behind many other family and friends who loved him dearly.

Richard was a graduate of Cheltenham High School and Penn State University. He was honorably discharged from the US Navy. After a successful career as an insurance broker, he retired and pursued his passion for boating. He acquired his Master Captain's license and spent years taking tourists out onto the water at Mystic Seaport and the Connecticut River. He also took a job with the State of Connecticut D.E.E.P. and spent years teaching boating safety classes. He retired just weeks ago and recently received a Letter of Commendation from the State. He was a Bolton Lions Member for many years and in 2017 was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services. He is a lifetime member of the Manchester Power Squadron and served as treasurer until recently.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society.

A Celebration of Life will be held in mid-spring and will be announced by March 20, 2023 in the following link: https://bit.ly/InRemembrance-RichardRJones.

Dick Jones and DEEP boating education have been synonymous here in CT for a couple of decades. More than any other Dick would go that extra mile to see that the textbooks, exams and class supplies were ready for his fellow instructors when needed, and the class results entered into the database promptly for the successful students to obtain their licenses quickly. He had a caring professionalism which is not common in today's day and age. A loss for all of us.

I am so sorry for your loss of Dick. He has been in my life for almost 30 years as a boss and a friend. We had so much fun at work together pulling pranks on each other. He has also shared holiday meals with me and my family. He will be missed. If you need anything please reach out to me. I´ll definitely see you at his celebration of life.

My sincerest condolences to Dick´s family and friends. I became acquainted with "Captain Dick" in 2014 when I was the Lions District Governor and saw him at many Lions functions over the years. We spoke about Mystic Seaport and Mystic [my hometown] and his love for the area! Lion Dick was a true gentleman and a very devoted member of the Bolton Lions. He will be sorely missed.

Mr. Jones was a really cool guy. I met Mr Jones through my husband over 25 years ago, was like I knew him forever, so nice to talk with. I would see Mr Jones when I went to pay my insurance back then and I remember Mr Jones always making sure to stop me and talk to me and ask about the family. We would talk for a good 20 minutes. Everyone who knew Mr Jones loved him. Mr Jones will be deeply missed. My sincere condolences to Bryan, Marianne, the family and friends. Forever in our hearts

I never got to meet Mr. Jones in person, but he was always so engaged with the fraternity news that was posted on Facebook - always had a fun story to share about his years at the chapter.

Here is a photo of Mr. Jones at Penn State with his brothers from Theta Chi in 1960. He is in the 2nd row from bottom and the 2nd person from the right.
