Sigrid Bird Obituary

Sigrid Ingeborg Bird, 88, of Bloomfield, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2018. Born in Germany on May 14, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Frieda (Butzke) Scheerbarth. Sigrid was raised and educated in Germany. She met her husband while he was serving as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force in Frankfurt following WWII. They were married in Germany when she was 23 years old and together they raised three children in Storrs. Sigrid loved to read-especially biographies-traveling to foreign countries, spending time at the beach, and visiting New York City. She worked for many years at the William Benton Museum at the University of Connecticut and had a deep interest in art. She also enjoyed watching PBS and classic films, and discussing politics. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter Christiane Bird of New York, NY; her sons Frank Bird of Andover, MA, and David Bird of Scottsdale, AZ; her sister Astrid Hasbrouck of Summit, NJ; and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her former husband, Dr. Frank Bird, who passed away in 2001. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the Seabury Retirement Community, 200 Seabury Drive, Bloomfield, CT 06002. The burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, CT 06095 is handling arrangements.
