GRONOWICZ, Sophie (Shymanski)
Sophie (Shymanski) Gronowicz, died at the age of 94 on April 30, 2013 in Farmington, where she lived independently at the Village Gate. Sophie was born and raised in New York City, where she became the first woman on the masthead of Popular Mechanics as Manager of Classified Advertising. She also was in charge of the Bureau of Information and answered questions on projects. Prior to this, she headed the Scholarly Books Section at the old Barnes and Nobles on Manhattan's 18th street. She was married to Antoni Gronowicz, well-known Polish-American writer, who died in 1985. Sophie was an extremely independent and progressive thinker and woman of her time, yet family was everything to her. Her brother Bill and sister Helen, parents Mary and Theodore predeceased Sophie. She leaves behind her son, Anthony, and daughter, Gloria; granddaughter Lili, and grandsons, John and Daniel; nieces Linda Rammler, Carol Shymanski and Tina Shymanski and nephew David Shymanski. Sophie will be missed for her sharp wit and hard work on behalf of her family; an amazing example of a woman who did everything with independence and class.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family in New York City. The Murphy Funeral Home, 115 Willow Street in Waterbury is in charge of arrangements. Visit www.murphyfuneralhomect.com to send an online condolence.
