Stanley Brittingham Obituary

Stanley Pershing Brittingham Jr., 75, of Berlin, fondly called 'Stan the Man', husband of Nancy Brittingham, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Hartford Hospital.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, son of Stanley Brittingham Sr. and Margaret (Dorsey) Brittingham, Stan grew up in Ambler, PA, attending Wissahickon High School. A graduate of Penn State University where he played varsity lacrosse, Stan was a life member of the PSU Alumni Association. It was during college summer break that Stan met Nancy, his wife of 52 years, working at Simm's Restaurant on the Boardwalk in Ocean City, New Jersey. Upon graduation, Stan enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving for three years.

Married in 1971, Stan and Nancy moved to upstate New York and then to Connecticut, ultimately settling in Haddam, where they raised twins. Over 36 years of life at the 'Toll House', Stan kept the grass trim, the gardens lush, and the woodstoves burning.

'Mr. Britt', as he was called by his students, taught English at Berlin High School for 30 years, creating strong, lasting connections. His love of the game of golf led him to coach the Berlin High School men's JV golf team while working on his regular game at Tunxis Country Club. Moving to Berlin after retirement, Stan enjoyed frequent encounters with his former students, always greeting them by name. He was an avid reader and a big fan of American history and settling of the west. A trip to Montana in 2010 took him to Little Big Horn on the anniversary of the Last Stand. Stan loved to cook, watch Yankees baseball, professional golf, and UConn women's basketball.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy (Glassmoyer) Brittingham; twin children, Lindsey Michelle Brittingham and Richmond Thomas Brittingham and his wife Kristen; a brother, Scott Brittingham and his wife Mary Margaret; three sisters, Diane Hall and her husband Robert, Gail Brittingham, and Betsy Barker; and two grandchildren, Chase Thomas Brittingham and Lilly Windsor Brittingham.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023 at 11 AM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin, 111 Chamberlain Hwy., Berlin. Calling hours will be on Friday from 9 AM to the time of the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Berlin High School Staff Scholarship, c/o Lynn Addamo, Berlin High School, 139 Patterson Way, Berlin, CT 06037. Oh, so many memories of our dear friend, Stan. We were lucky to know Stan, Nan and the twins for over 40 years. Always with a gentle smile, Stan was a great friend, husband and father. He was sincere and kind, loving and honest. How very special. We will miss you, Stan, and are so grateful to have had you in our lives!

Had Mr. Brittingham for freshman English. He called us all "Frosh". Can still remember discussing, "A Day No Pigs Would Die" in his class. He was a memorable guy with a great sense of humor. Sorry for your loss.
