Steven Horowitz Obituary

Steven Whitlow Horowitz, age 68, died on the morning of December 18th, 2020 in the arms of his wife, Adrienne and son, Matthew, following a brief and brutal clash with cancer. Steve was born in 1952 in Washington DC and raised in Arlington VA. He had many wild adventures in his youth until settling down in Salt Lake City, Utah. While there he earned his Phd in Psychology from the University of Utah, took wonderful hikes in the exquisite Red Rock country of southern Utah, met and married Adrienne Benjamin, and became a Dad for the first time. In 1991, he arrived in New Britain with family in tow, to assume a position in the Psychology Department at Central Connecticut State University. Professionally, he was Dr Horowitz. Despite teaching such challenging courses as Research Methods and the History of Psychology, he was treasured by many students as a caring mentor, whose devotion to teaching helped them achieve academic success. His colleagues fondly recall his understated wit, intellect, and kindness. Those who knew Steve are aware of his dedication to his family. An early riser, he brought Adrienne coffee every morning of 34 years of marriage. He was exceptionally supportive of Adrienne's career as both a clinical social worker and as an advocate for those with intellectual disability and autism. He was an adoring and proud father to Matthew. His towering compassion was seen in his devotion to his daughter, Zoe, whose special needs require constant care. Steve was engaged in his community, elected to the Board of Education for New Britain Public Schools, a volunteer position he served for 8 years-2 years as chair. A great lover of music, he played the accordion, cello, piano, autoharp, and dulcimer. He was especially well-loved for entertaining at the family's annual solstice sing-a-longs. Being an avid reader of fiction, history, mysteries, scientific literature, and the daily New York Times, Steve's interest and knowledge of the world made him a fascinating friend. Predeceased by his younger brother, David, and his parents, Martha and Norman, he is survived by his bother Michael of Valdosta, Ga, his wife, Adrienne, son Matthew, and daughter Zoe. An outdoor tree planting and memorial service will be held in the spring for friends and family to celebrate Steve's memory in person. Please reach out to Adrienne or Matthew for updates. The family would like to thank the staff on C5 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut for their care and support. The family has been overwhelmed by the many friends who have cooked us nutritious meals, sent gorgeous flowers, and written loving cards. The CT Department of Developmental Services and the non-profit agency Harc have been a tremendous help to the family regarding care for Zoe. To honor his memory, please consider donating to Harc, which has stepped up to help meet Zoe's needs through this challenge. I was a friend of Steve's in his youth. We grew up together attending the Unitarian Church of Arlington, VA. Steve was a gentle, calming presence in those days. I remember deep, intellectual conversations covering subjects from politics to the cosmic state of reality. I will never forget his generosity and kindness. We spent a lot of time together and I remember his very fondly.

He was such a good listener. So patient and encouraging. And a really good cellist.

I attendedYorktown High School with Steve. I played 2nd Cello in the school orchestra with Steve who was 1st Cello.

We enjoyed many adventures, including a hitchhike to Philadelphia in a blizzard He was a great friend. We shared an apartment in Arlington Va for a while prior to my marriage to Margaret,my wife of 45 years.
About 10 years ago I reached out and found Dr Horowitz after 40 years. I did not follow through with communication after all those years.
Things came up, I was busy etc.
Now I find that Steve has passed. A lesson learned too late in life.
I will regret not following through forever.
I didn’t meet his wife ,daughter, and son. Steve was without a doubt the most compassionate and intelligent person I’ve ever met. I’m so sorry for the family’s loss and mine also

Steve was a wonderful friend to have, caring, thoughtful, observant, emotionally supportive, and so much fun to be with. Working for several summers at a Vermont camp with him was a joy. May his memory always be a blessing. Phil and I send our love and comfort to Adrienne, Mathew and Zoe.

As his student, I knew him then only as Dr. Horowitz. However, his mentorship and tutelage were hugely responsible for a course correction in my life. He was a great teacher and his dry wit and manner were always welcome and supportive. The love his family has for him and the wonderful sentiment expressed so obviously reflect the depth of their loss. My sincere condolences. He was a wonderful man and ... 20 years after we parted ways, my daughter was also a psychology student who also found Dr. Horowitz that same as I had, influencing a generation, I suppose. He was a great man and will be missed. Peace.

It was an honor to work for my former professor, to call Dr. Horowitz, Steve. I got to share intimate moments like this one while caring for his daughter, Zoe. I miss our pre-COVID trips to take the girl swimming, or the trampoline park. I miss catching the way you would look at her. I miss our conversations about your work, our shared interests, and most importantly your unconditional love for your family. I will forever miss you dear friend.

All my love Adrienne, Matthew, Zoe & Tesla ❤

Dr. Horovitz was a big defender against injustice in our community and our nation. He was always very humble about his intellect. It is so sad to see him gone, but Adriane will carry on his legacy! Rest in peace!

Dear Adrienne, Matthew, and Zoe,

Marga and I express our heartfelt loss of our dear friend. Steven was a special person that gave so much to everyone whose lives he touched. He was kind, generous, thoughtful, and always ready to give a helping hand. I will always remember him as a wonderful person: student, colleague, and friend. We shared many adventures hiking and fishing in the high mountains. As my student, Steven was always eager to learn and continued that as a mentor to his students. He will be most remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, and friend to all of us. He is missed by all who knew him.

Adrienne and family, I am so sorry to hear about Steve’s illness and his passing. He was dedicated to his family and his community, also very knowledgeable with a beaming smile. I worked with him as a member of the New Britain Board of Education. Such a great guy! I am very sorry for your loss.
