Thomas G. Carruthers

1929 - 2023

THOMAS GEMMELL CARRUTHERS, 94, of Fresno, CA, the beloved husband of Carole Carruthers, passed away on June 6, 2023. Tom was born on May 5, 1929 in Worcester, MA and grew up in nearby Shrewsbury. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and graduated with degrees from Becker Junior College and The University of Hartford. He had an avid interest in world affairs and politics and served in state, local and national positions, including as a Connecticut State Senator, a member of the Connecticut State Board of Education and as the chairman of local Republican Party in Vernon, CT for many years during his residency there. He also owned and operated several local businesses in Vernon. After moving to Anaheim, CA, he served as Development Manager for the City of Anaheim. After retiring from the City of Anaheim, Tom and Carole owned and operated an RV dealership in Victorville/Hesperia, CA. And, for many years while living in Fresno, Tom also served as an ombudsman for the CA Department of Aging.

Tom had great zeal for life and an even greater love for his family, which was everything to him. Besides his wife, Carole, Tom is survived by his sons Thomas (and wife Linda) of Darien, CT; Scott (and his wife Katrice) of Tallahassee, FL; Brian of Laguna Beach, CA; and Robert (and his partner Becky Leckinger) of Tallahassee, FL. He is also survived by his daughters Lori Allison (and her husband Rex) of Bend, OR; Diane Montgomery of Fresno, CA; Karen Montgomery of Clovis, CA; and Gina Wilson (and her husband Perry) of Anaheim, CA. He also leaves his grandchildren Thomas, Dylan and Julia Carruthers, Evan Carruthers, David Petrich, Elizabeth Nelson, Donald Atkins, Jessica Lopes, and Melanie Gould, and great-grandchildren Bostyn, Layla, Newton and Landon, and many nieces and nephews, including Debi Bohr, David Jamieson, Mary Dolan and Sandra Emery. Tom was pre-deceased by his parents Thomas and Maria Carruthers, his birth parents William and Elizabeth Jamieson, and his siblings William Jamieson, David Jamieson and Mary Grimshaw.

There will be a private funeral service for Tom in Fresno, CA.
