Thomas Horan Obituary

Thomas J. Horan, Jr., age 68, of West Hartford, CT passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 28, 2016 after a long battle fighting Pancreatic Cancer. He was born in Hartford, CT on May 31, 1947 to the late Thomas J. Horan and Mildred Horan. He graduated from Conard High School in West Hartford, CT in 1965. Tom was in the Marines from 1967 through 1971, proudly serving in the Vietnam War. Tom was married to Kim I. Horan on April 26, 1988. They were married 28 years. Tom worked for the United States Post office and retired after 30 years. He gained many lifelong friends while working there. Tom enjoyed traveling many places with his wife, especially their trips to Ireland. He was also actively involved in volunteering for Gifts of Love. He was a devoted husband, loving father and loyal friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Tom especially loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. His love for children was so great that after he retired from the post office, Tom became a crossing guard at one of the local Elementary Schools in town. "Mr. Tom" and his red truck were there faithfully every day to watch out for his kids. Tom is survived by his wife and best friend, Kim I. Horan of West Hartford. He leaves behind his 4 children; Jacqueline Sargenti of South Windsor, Sonia Mancini and her husband Ted of West Hartford, Dayan Bedingfield and her husband Bud of West Hartford, and Thomas Horan III of New Britain. He is also survived by his sister; Anne Tyrol and her husband Rick of Unionville. Tom was predeceased by his sister Cathy Stevens. Tom also leaves behind many grandchildren; Michael Sargenti and his wife Kelly of Ashford, CT; Matthew and Joseph Sargenti of South Windsor, CT; Anthony, Michael, and Angela Mancini of West Hartford, CT, Jackson Bedingfield of West Hartford, CT; and two great-grandchildren; Ashlyn and Aiden Sargenti of Ashford, CT. Tom is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. Tom would like to thank the ALS Association CT Chapter and the staff in the respiratory unit at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, as well as Dr. Whittaker and the team, for all their support for his wife, Kim. Memorial donations can be sent to The ALS Association Connecticut Chapter at 4 Oxford Road, Unit D4, Milford, CT 06460 or you may donate online by visiting the website at webct.alsa.org in memory of Thomas Horan, Jr. on behalf of Kim Horan. I just learned of Tom's passing. I am so sorry. Tom and I went "steady" in high school and I never forgot him. He was a kind and thoughtful boyfriend. May God bless you in your time of sorrow.
