Thomas Malloy Obituary

Thomas Malloy, 87, of East Granby, CT, passed away peacefully at his home on June 18, 2022. Tom was born and raised in Worcester, MA, where he met his wife, Bernadette (Morgan) Malloy. They were married for 65 years. Tom and Bernie moved to Hartford, CT, in 1959, where they raised their four children. He is predeceased by his daughter Catherine (Malloy) Pintavalle, and leaves his wife Bernie, and children Mary (Malloy) Brotman of Simsbury; Christopher Malloy and his wife Donna (Ziemian) of Manchester, NJ; and Justin Malloy of East Granby, CT. He also leaves his son-in-law Thomas Pintavalle of Jewett City, CT; grandsons Mark Pintavalle of Jewett City, CT, and Conor Malloy of Manchester, NJ; granddaughters Meghan (Pintavalle) Dearnley and her husband Brian Dearnley of Glenside, PA, Maeve Malloy and her fiancé Paul McDannell of Philadelphia, PA, Catherine Brotman of Las Vegas, NV, and Michaela Brotman of Simsbury, CT; and great-grandchildren Catherine and Eric Dearnley of Glenside, PA. A graduate of Worcester's St. John's High School and College of the Holy Cross, Tom went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force, and work at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (Cigna) for more than 35 years. Tom's life was one of true service to his family, his church and his community. He was chairman of the City of Hartford Pension Commission for 20-plus years, and served on Blue Hills Civic Association, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Metacomet Homes and East Granby Public Library boards. He also was an active parishioner and supporter of St. Justin's Church in Hartford, CT, St. Bernard's Church in Tariffville, CT, and St. Therese's Church in Granby, CT. Together with Bernie, he received the Saint Joseph Medal of Appreciation from the Archdiocese of Hartford. Finally, he was an avid patron of numerous causes and charities, including Hartford's House of Bread and Worcester's Nativity School. Whether Tom was collecting bagels at a local restaurant to bring to the House of Bread, sharing his financial prowess with a non-profit charity, or passing on his vast knowledge of gardening, literature, sports and the world in general to his family, Tom live his life with grace, humility, unconditional love and an un-self-conscious care for anyone in need. When asked about his life, Tom once summed it up by saying "It's pretty simple. We probably didn't even make a conscious decision for some of our activities. We had read Matthew 25, and someone asked for help." Tom's family will receive friends on Thursday June 23, 2022, from 9:30 -10:30AM at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook Street, Granby, CT 06035. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00AM at St. Therese Church, 120 W. Granby Road, Granby, CT 06035. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Tariffville, CT. Donations may be made to the House of Bread 1453 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06120, or The Nativity School of Worcester, 67 Lincoln St, Worcester, MA 01605. Dear Bernie & Family - I will always have wonderful memories of our sandwich making at St. Bernard's Church hall for one of Tom's many charities - The House of Bread. Prior to my joining with this awesome group of friends & parishioners, I had just begun a Spiritual Journey @ this amazing Church where it was destined to meet many good people ; among them Tom & Bernie. This was in summer of 2011 and a brief time later, read in the church bulletin of the Social Action Committee for House of Bread led by Tom & Bernie. Yes, sandwiches were made, food donations brought to those in deep need which we felt honored to be a part of. Like it was yesterday when about a dozen of us gathered not only to provide nourishment, but fully, really enjoy ourselves with stories, latest family news and more. In fact it was the atmosphere that fostered the "Family" vibe. Bernie would gift us with garden bounty and Tom was always there beaming, quiet but ever in the moment no matter where he was. Temporarily based in NC to care for my husband was the primary reason that I could not attend. God Bless you Bernie and your family. Tom is never far away as he watches over all of you. Love is Strong, Love Endures and Love always wins. with our love, Fran Patrick & Family.

Bernie & Family,
We were saddened to hear about Tom's passing. Tom always made us feel welcome when we first started in CIGNA's GPD back in the late 80s. That tight knit actuarial group still brings back great memories and he was such an integral part of that successful team. Not to mention a mentor to so many. We were always impressed that Tom could churn pension numbers in his head as accurately as he did. More importantly, he was a kind and engaging person who you could talk to about anything. He had a very distinct chuckle and laugh that we will always fondly remember. In our eyes a true legend in the DB actuarial field, he will be missed. May his memory be eternal to all of his family, friends, and all of the people who were honored to have worked with him.

He was a special friend in college, and then later, my wife and I always visited with Tom ,often with Bernadette, @ many of our Holy Cross reunions, where our relationship deepened a lot. I'm proud to have that depth with Tom, his character & values, and his many activities .

Tom greatly influenced me as a young actuary and I modeled my professional career on his.

He was well respected by clients and colleagues alike. He often would provide estimated financial figures which would, days later after running the data, would prove to be right on the money so to speak.

I was always impressed Tom could pinpoint any files in his office amongst the stacks and piles.

He balanced it all well, demanding national account clients, contributions to the Society of Actuaries, and mentoring many, many actuarial students.

It was always clear his family was important to him and I´m sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately I am out of town and will not be able to attend his services.
