GRIECO, Vito A., Jr.
Vito A. Grieco, Jr., 64 years of age, of Rocky Hill, formerly of Church St., Old Wethersfield, passed this life and began his spiritual journey on Thursday (September 13, 2012). Born March 12, 1948, he was the son of the late Vito and Sadie (Fiandaco) Grieco. A 1966 graduate of Bulkeley High School, Hartford, Vito was a natural, outstanding athlete: a halfback in football (#47), a guard in basketball (#24) and excelled in every athletic competition in which he was a member. He attended Manchester Community College. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, where he served as a Tank Commander. After his return, he worked for the Hull Brewing Company, and in 1976 he joined the Hartford Distributors (HDI) family, becoming a well known, well respected salesman for 36 years. Vito had a love for his company, his position, all of his fellow employees, as well as his customers, and all felt the same for him. But most of all, he cherished his family: a devoted husband, loving father, and friend. Vito had a pure heart, a compassionate, generous spirit, always with a smile on his face and a warm handshake. He had many challenges in his life, which he valiantly fought, always coming out on top and ready for whatever else came his way. He was a committed fan to the Red Sox, the Giants, the Celtics and all of the UConn Husky teams. Vito's passion was running; he ran every morning before starting his route, and he competed in many many road races, and triathlons. He was an all around athlete. He leaves to mourn his passing, his best friend, partner, and soul mate, his wife of 41 years, Diane (Pion) Grieco, his most precious of gifts, his loving children: Vito Grieco, III and his wife Diane (Accatino) of San Diego, CA; his daughter, Regina Grieco Vignone and her husband John of Chelmsford, MA; the joy of his life, his beautiful grandson Christian Robert Grieco of San Diego, CA; his in-laws: Aline Wysocki of Hartford, Arthur Pion and his wife Nancy of FL, Jeanette Gumienny and her husband, Stanley of VT and FL, Julie Pion of Waterbury, Gloria Pion of FL; and dear, cherished friends: Cathy and Douglas, Matthew (his godson) and McKenzie Brown of Wethersfield, Judy Garneau of Waterbury, his Hartford Distributors family, and many many other very close, loving friends, too numerous to list. He also leaves nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and many wonderful cousins, and his brother, John, of Bristol. He also leaves his buddy, his Labradoodle, Mercedes. Besides his parents and his in-laws, Joseph and Cecile (Sirois) Pion, he was predeceased by his brother, Joseph and his brother-in-law, Robert Wysocki. The family expresses its heartfelt appreciation to the very special 9 Central ICU and 9 North Neurology Teams at Hartford Hospital for their dedication, commitment and compassion.
Calling hours will be Monday (September 17) from 4-8 p.m. at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday (September 18) at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield. Interment will follow in Village Cemetery, Old Wethersfield with full military honors. Contributions in Vito's memory may be made to the Ocular Melanoma Foundation, P.O. Box 29261, Richmond, VA 23242, Sacred Heart Church, 56 Hartford Ave., Wethersfield, CT 06109 or to Homes for Our Troops, 6 Main Street, Taunton, MA 02780. Diane and Family,
I'm sorry to say it's has been over 45 years since I last talked with Vito. However, I feel compelled to offer my sympathies to you and your family. Vito and I played football for Bulkeley and grew up a few blocks from each other in the south end of Hartford. Like many of his teammates, I remember Vito for his competitive nature and athletic abilities. I also remember him for his ability to have fun in everything he did. In high school, Vito lived life to its fullest and always made sure everyone else around him did the same. I have a strong sense that this was a consistent theme throughout his entire life. I will always have wonderful memories of Vito. He was one of the good guys.

I will never forget all the fun Vito brought to everything he did. His great smile and sense of humor brought much laughter to MCC, Friendly's and, for those that remember, Sputnuts and of course, Joey's. You will be missed old friend, so sorry to hear of your passing, but God and his angels will just love your company. May Vito's family find peace in the memory of one who cared so much, my condolences to you all.

I had the privilege of knowing Vito for close to 35 years and the opportunity to work closely with him for the past 8 years. Vito was a consummate professional in all of his dealings in his business life, he was an even better man with his love for his family and his spirituality in his personal life. His advice and wise counsel will be missed by all who knew him.

Dear Diane, Vito III and Regina,

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with your father Vito, for over 10 years.

During that time we developed a close and trusting friendship both at work and after work.

I trusted Vito more than anyone and he always set me straight or tipped me off if there was something going on that I should know about.

I earned his trust and loyalty.

He stood by me if the going got rough and always was in my corner if I needed guidance.

I will never forget his kindness his sense of humor and his steadfast determination and mentoring.

One thing for sure and that I learned early on, If Vito like you and you earned his trust you could always count on him being there for you.

He was always there for me and that I will never forget.

God Bless

Vito's Family--Knew Vito by reputation when we would scrimmage Bulkeley in football in the '60's and later when he moved into Old Wethersfield and when he would stop by at the Old Town Cafe filling in for our salesman. He was always smiling and upbeat no matter what the circumstances. He will be missed by many but everyone will have great memories of a great guy.

To Diane and Family

Vito was one of my very first friends when my family moved to CT. He grew up for a short time in the north end of Hartford and spent a lot of time playing at my home. He was a favorite of my mother. We played midget football together and you could see that he would be a great athlete...eventually he moved to the southend and of course starred on Bulkley's football and basketball teams.. although I was at Weaver a rival, we remained friends. I always held a special kind of brother to brother feeling with Vito... I only wish that the last few years we have not in touch we could have been. He will always remain that special friend in my heart because he was the kind of person who just liked people no matter race/ethnicity, rich or poor Vito was a special person and will be a special person in Heaven. God Bless you all
