William Connelly Obituary

William Howard Connelly, 95, resident of Suffield for more than 60 years, died peacefully on July 12th. He joins his cherished wife Frankie who passed away on Nov 10th, 2014 after a remarkable, joyous marriage of 67 years. Known as "Bill" to friends and "Geeka" to three successive family generations, he had grown frail but he never lost his sparkle nor his intense love and regard for family, friends and community. He didn't seek to depart this earth, yet he more than once remarked that he was excited and curious about what was in store once he did. Bill was born in Longmeadow, MA on August 28, 1920. As well as his bride Frankie, Bill was predeceased by his parents and his brother Jack. He is survived by his four children and their families- Nancy Truesdell of Riverside CT, Jack Connelly of Madison WI, Amy Connelly of Riverton CT and Richard Connelly of Pownal ME. Eleven grandchildren survive as do eight great grandchildren. He also leaves his devoted caregiver, Aldene Morgan with whom he shared an abiding trust, love and affection. All adored him. It was a wonderful life. Bill graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in the class of 1939, Princeton University class of 1943 and the Harvard Business School class of 1950. His education was interrupted by service in the US Army from 1943 to 1946 during which he fought as a lieutenant in the infantry in France, receiving awards for valor of which he steadfastly declined to speak. Subsequently he was called up to serve as an Army captain for military intelligence during the Korean War. Bill and Frankie married on June 7, 1947 and established their permanent home in Suffield several years thereafter. A career in insurance ensued, followed by his appointment as assistant director of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving in 1968 and appointment as executive director in 1971, a position in which he thrived until his retirement in 1985. His civic contributions were legion. He was a vibrant and vital member of Second Baptist Church where he taught young adults for many years, leader of Indian Guides, member of the Suffield school board, an active Rotarian, Big Brother for numerous youth, board member of ASSIST. He took it upon himself to label significant trees on Suffield's North Main Street with its genus and species with one of his mentees. He continued to volunteer for the Hartford Foundation well past his retirement. He was an exemplary husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor and friend. He never tired of imparting his knowledge of birds and trees, of jokes and songs and of sailing off Circle Beach in Madison CT for the benefit of those who knew him. He had a love for song birds dating back to early morning bird walks at Forest Park with his 5th grade teacher. You always felt he was genuinely delighted to see you, perhaps even more so as he aged. He had a unique ability to "brighten the corner" where he was, the revered pied piper thoroughly enjoying many playful hours engaging with his own children and their offspring. He loved cross country skiing, tennis and paddle tennis, as much for the company as for the sport. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, July 24 beginning at 2 pm at the Second Baptist Church, 100 North Main St Suffield. Gifts in remembrance may be made to ASSIST (assist-inc.org), Forest Park, (payable to City of Springfield with Forest Park in memo line) Parks Department, 200 Trafton Rd Springfield, MA 01108 or to the Jesse F. Smith Memorial Forest (payable to Town of Suffield with Jessie Fowler Smith on memo line), 83 Mountain Rd Suffield, CT 06078 or Sunrise Park, 2075 Mountain Rd West Suffield, CT 06093 . Dear Connelly Family,

I happened upon your Dad's obit and a flood of happy childhood memories came into my heart and mind. Visits by Brownie and the fun hiding in the shed under the house where the bikes were stored. My condolences at the loss of your magnanimous Dad (that is how I remember him) and Frankie too. I think I still have a photo of Dicky with me when we swapped winter coats. Peace to the family, Love, Elaine

Dear Family and Friends of Bill - what a wonderful life Bill had, and Ron and I had because of him. Out first visit to Suffield in 1962 - on our way to Fort Bragg courtesy of the US Army, and that was our first meeting with Bill and Frankie. Bill sold Ron a life insurance policy at the 'bride and groom' reception. We still laugh at that. Bill and Frankie were friends with Ron's dear sister and brother in law - Nell and John Jenkinson. Because of Nell - and the vision of having friends like family,we moved here in 1971 and have lived across the street since 1979. Bill was always an inspiration - to us and our daughters - especially Sarah- Rev. Dr. Sarah Birmingham Drummond. When I last saw Bill - a few weeks before he passed I told him Sarah was headed back to Yale to be Dean of the Theological School there. Not a Baptist - but close enough.

We want to express our feelings - not of sympathy - because he had a life well lived, but our feelings of gratitude for having known him. I have a picture of Bill, Frankie, Ron and me from our 50th Wedding anniversary - 2012 - which has more memories than can be conveyed by a snap shot.

I also want to acknowledge Aldene - the ever faithful - the act of putting her life goals on hold to be with Bill to the end. What greater gift.

Love to all of you... may you continue to feel the inspiration from Bill and Frankie.

What an honor it was to get to know Bill and Frankie in their elder years. Visits at their gracious home on Main Street were a pleasure. It seemed like Bill could talk in an informed and interesting manner about nearly any topic -- he had so many interests.

My prayers are with your family, and with the many, many who were privileged to know Bill and Frankie as part of their spiritual family. They have been an inspiration to us all.

Bless us and Keep us Gracious God,

My dearest Connelly family - I was such a part of your lives for so many years. After I moved to Ohio, one of my favorite visits to Connecticut was with Bill and Frankie!! I was always so thrilled to see them, and catch up on the family. Bill was like a father to me for years!! I spent so many days into nights on Main Street - along with many years at the shore with such fond memories. I know Bill is at peace, and now joining his beloved wife, Frankie. He will always be a special part of my life. God bless two wonderful people!!

To the Connelly family,
My prayers and sympathy to all of you on the loss of this wonderful man. He had such a love of life, people and especially family. He and your Mom are together once again, holding hands and shining down on all of you. My life is richer having known both of your parents and I will remain eternally grateful for the love they shared with me so unselfishly. God Bless you all and comfort you at this difficult time.
