William Downes Obituary
1931/November 25th, 2014. Bill was raised in West Hartford and was a graduate of Hall High School, Dartmouth College and McGill University. He practiced dentistry in West Hartford for several years along with his father and grandfather. He later joined Aetna Life and Casualty heading up their group dental division. In pre-retirement he was a successful insurance consultant. Bill will be sadly missed by his wife of 16 years Marina Downes, sons William the IV of Barkhamsted, David R. of Newington, Jeffrey G. of Wethersfield, and Adam of Idaho. Bill also leaves a sister, Linda Brown, and a brother, Richard Downes. William was predeceased by a daughter, Robin. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren. Bill loved his dogs as well as his country. Funeral arrangements are yet to be determined and will be at the privacy of his family. Contributions can be made to the Humane Society, Newington, CT, in Williams name.

I worked with Bill for many years as a dental consultant and business partner. He was always a fountain of knowledge and real good guy. He was very proud of his New England heritage. Respectfully, Ernie Giachetti, DDS.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Dr. Downes in the 70's. Just a fun guy always willing to share his super dental knowledge with all who sought his guidance.

I loss my very best friend and brother 11/25/14. Though it was expected because of his health, it was always my hope for a recovery. We spoke often over the phone laughing and remembering our times together, The last time we talked was 11/23, I told him that I loved him, he said I love you too little sister.

Although I haven't seen Bill for many years, I have heard about Bill through Lynda. I know she will sorely miss him and I will miss hearing about him. My deepest sympathy to the family and especially to Lynda, my friend for over 50 years.

Many great memories of this wonderful man. He and his father were two class men. Bill was so very knowledgeable of dentistry and could communicate it so well, too. The part of Dr. Downes that is so memorable is his super personality. He was so approachable and let us all know we were important to him as he was to us. He was one of the many reasons that Group Claim was such a good place to work in the 1970's. Thanks Dr. Downes!
