William Hacker Obituary

William (Bill) C. Hacker died of cancer Saturday night, 3/1/14, with his wife Sara and family at his side. Bill was born in Johnson City, TN on 6/12/50. He earned an M.A. in History from East Tennessee State University, where he met and married Sara. They moved to Hartford in 1976 for careers in the insurance industry. Bill retired as Director of Learning from Prudential in 2011. Bill welcomed everyone he met and accepted everyone as they were. His view of the world was clear-eyed and no-nonsense, valuing intelligence over ideology. His wit was dry but never mean. He prided himself on self-sufficiency, but was quick to lend a hand, an ear, or a shoulder. He was a devoted son and son-in-law, a cherished brother to his and Sara's many siblings, and every niece, nephew, friend's child, and child's friend's favorite "Uncle Bill." He and Sara lived a 42-year love story. A memorial service will be held Sat. 3/8, 3 pm, at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury. Friends may call beginning at 2 pm. I have fond memories of travelling with Bill to Dubuque, IA. Dinner in Galena were always the best as he talked so fondly of his life and his family. He was a great man, and on a side note, always told him he reminded me of Bill Clinton:-). He would then oblige me with his best impersonation! Great man, well liked and respected by so many. Was saddened to hear of his passing. Sending you thoughts and condolences during this time.

My condolences. Bill was well liked and very respected for his knowledge and ability to share that knowledge with his Prudential associates. He is missed.

My now-18-year old son met Bill during a Prudential Take Your Child to Work Day, when he was 12 or 13 and Bill taught a Pru History class. Apparently, when he saw my son's name, he told him "I know your mom; I work with her." Scott always remembered that and would occasionally ask about Bill. When I told him this weekend about Bill's situation, his response was "he was a really nice guy, i liked him. he was a cool guy." To make such an impression on a kid in just one encounter says a lot about the type of person Bill was. He will be missed by many. My deepest sympathies, and thanks for sharing Bill with the rest of us.
