William Huber Obituary

William "Bill" Huber, Sr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 24th at the Hospital of Central Connecticut at the age of 94. He was the devoted husband of his wife of 61 years, Carol (Nyquist) Huber. Bill was a life-long resident of New Britain and the son of the late Joseph and Lena Huber. Bill was born in New Britain, attended local schools and graduated from New Britain High School in 1944. He was in the U.S. Army during WWII where he served in the Pacific. Following the war, he attended and graduated from Arnold College, (now Bridgeport University) which a degree in Physical Education, Health and Guidance Counseling. Later he received his Masters degree from Springfield College and his sixth year certificate from the University of Hartford. After his family, Bill's first love was sports. He began his teaching career at New Britain High School in 1951, teaching physical education and health, and coaching basketball and baseball. In 1987, he accepted the position of Director of Physical Education, Health and Safety for the New Britain school system which he held for 28 years. Throughout his career he mentored and greatly impacted the lives of many students and teachers. Over the course of the years, he received many awards including Coach of the year, Athletic Director of the year, and the CIAC Coaches Hall of Fame. He loved the New Britain Sports Hall of Fame and worked for it for many years. Aside from sports and teaching, Bill was an active and supportive member of St. John's Lutheran Church serving in many ways, including Congregation Council president. In the community he served on many boards including the Boys and Girls Club of New Britain, the New Britain YMCA and the Hospital of Central Connecticut. He enjoyed his membership in the Donau Club and the New Britain Lodge of Elks. When his family was young he was active in the Boy Scouts of America. With his family, he traveled extensively in the United States. With Carol, they traveled to Europe and vacation places outside of the country. His family has many wonderful memories of those times as well as of the get-togethers with relatives and friends. Among Bill's favorite memories were his days with the Pioneers Men's Club of the post high school days. In additional of his wife, he leaves behind his son, William Huber, Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Napa, CA; his daughter, Dawn Huber and her partner Brian McLaughlin; his very special granddaughter, Sarah Welensky; and many nieces and nephews, their spouses and many dear friends. Bill's family would like to express appreciation for the compassionate care received at HCC and to the staff of Middlewoods of Newington. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 3rd at 11:30am at St. John's Lutheran Church, 295 Arch St., New Britain. Very sorry to hear of the passing of Bill. He was a friend of my Dad, who passed in Sept 2020, and used to come over to visit my Dad occasionally with Carol. He was a great guy and will be missed. May God comfort his family during this difficult time.

Farewell, Coach! I am just one of the many hundreds of young men, the Golden Hurricanes of NBHS, who played baseball proudly for Coach Huber. He taught us to play well, fairly and to respect our opponents. He always put strong, competitive teams on the field and we were always proud of our coach, our team and our school. Coach was also a lifelong friend of my father, Edward G. Vater. He was a positive influence in my life and the lives of hundreds of young men from New Britain.

I would like to extend my condolences to the Huber family. I had the pleasure of knowing Bill and experiencing his generosity, kindness, sense of humor and zest for life. He was a man of God as well as possessing a great caring nature for his fellow man. I´m sure he was welcomed into the arms of our Lord for his just reward.

It doesn't seem so long ago
The day that we first met
I remember it so clearly
And all the things you said
Then there came the virus
Which built a standing wall
It sadly took so many lives
And made prisoners of us all
I prayed that you'd be safe and well
And once again we'd meet
Thankfully,that day did come
And I was happily relieved
I am blessed to have found in you
Both a mentor and a friend
It's not goodbye,Bill,but only
Until we meet again.
