William Jeffers Obituary

Chris Jeffers, born in New York City on April 23, 1941 to Walter Wilson Jeffers and Mary Walden Jeffers, died at his home in Hartford on June 27, 2022 after a brief illness. It was a blessing that he had the opportunity to meet and hold his first grandchild, Christopher Flynn Jeffers, for the last two months of his life. He is survived by his wife, Dectora Coe Jeffers, and three children: Alexander Jeffers (married to Michelle Marie Jeffers), Natalie Jeffers-Hansen (married to Lars Jeffers-Hansen) and Penelope Jeffers. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Jeffers Brami. While growing up in Manhasset, Long Island, Chris developed a love of piano, oboe and flute. His gift for jazz piano took him and his two talented high school friends to the Ted Mack Amateur Hour in 1956, where they won two rounds of competition. He was always a member of the school orchestra and glee club, and was active in student government and athletics. After graduating from the University of Colorado in 1964 where he majored in chemistry and music, his path took him to Nepal (Peace Corps volunteer), to Washington DC (Peace Corps desk officer), and then to Silicon Valley, California (Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center and Atari) where he eventually headed a consulting firm specializing in providing expert witnesses in technology-related legal disputes. When Chris was offered a sabbatical year from work, he persuaded his young family to try living in a different country, learning a new language and experiencing a new culture; they spent a year in France where the children became fluent, and where the family made life-long friends. Upon retirement in 2007, he and his wife traveled in Asia for two-and-a-half years, carrying only a suitcase and a backpack each – again, his idea. They settled in Hartford in 2010 in order to be near Chris's mother who resided in Bloomfield. A man of many talents and interests, Chris was first and foremost a musician. He made music wherever he went. His love of everything from madrigals to Romantic composers to Bartok to musical theater to jazz was reflected in the music he played and composed. His proficiency with many instruments, but primarily with the piano, meant he was often playing in bands and small groups, or leading the singing at neighborhood parties. He provided the accompaniment for more Christmas singalongs than can be counted. He lent his multiple talents to fundraising events, writing scripts, scores or new arrangements for public and private schools in his California community and for Center Church in Hartford. What brought out the best of his formidable musical talent was his love of sharing the joy of making music with others. His other interests included linguistics, geography, travel, and children's education. While he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal, he rewrote the country's middle school science curriculum which in large part is still in use. Chris's warmth, his positive spirit, his high ethical standards and his ability to connect with other people through his many areas of interest and expertise made him appreciated, admired and beloved by many. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 8, at 11 am at the Meeting House of the First Church of Christ in Hartford on the corner of Main and Gold Streets. A light lunch will follow at the Church House. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Educate the Children Nepal (www.etc-nepal.org/donate) or to The 1636 Heritage Partnership, Inc (www.1636hp.org), an organization devoted to preserving the Center Church Meeting House on Main Street (the third oldest building in Hartford) and its sister building, the Church House on Gold Street.

Chris was my oldest friend, colleague, and "partner in crime". We met in the amazing Manhasset Congregational Church teen-aged choir, and I was lucky to be welcomed into Chris' jazz band, where we had many happy gigs, and many intersections afterwards: in college, theatre, more bands, research groups ...

I had a research group at Xerox Parc, and when Xerox needed an "education expert" to help deal with its education companies and the educational national labs, I suggested they hire Chris and take advantage of his many experiences in the Peace Corps. Not long after this I was able to get Chris to join my research group, where he contributed much in so many ways, and showed his great talent in helping to run things.

After Parc I went to Atari as Chief Scientist, and convinced Chris to "join and run things" -- he was great at this to no surprise.

Chris was a Force of Nature in the most benign sense of the phrase: "making good and wonderful things happen with great care and verve" would be a fitting slogan.

Deckie asked his friends to contribute birthday cards for Chris' 80th birthday, and here's the one I made for him.

I miss Chris greatly for many reasons, and especially his vibrant kind spirit for all kinds of adventures!

Deckie, my heart goes out to you. He was such a wonderful man, and the Xerox Singers so enjoyed rehearsing in your Portola Valley home with "Little Bird." Much love, Jude

My whole life changed as result of Chris hiring me at Xerox PARC despite his concern that I didn't play an instrument. Working with Chris was one of the best times of my life and I'm saddened to learn of his passing.

Chris had wide circle of friends, all of whom cherished their time with him. Of his many, many gifts, what stood out most for me was his ability to light up every room he ever entered.

Chris Jeffers was a member of the Peace Corps training team that prepared my group (#15) to go to Nepal at the end of 1967, More importantly, however, I and several of my colleagues were selected to work as counterparts to science teachers in high schools that had been selected to participate in the Science Teaching Enrichment Program (STEP). Several years earlier, Chris had started STEP, which consisted primarily of detailed lesson plans designed to teach science as process of experimentation in topics relevant to the daily life of students; e.g., learning about levers, as opposed to memorizing electric bells. (When I arrived, students in 9th grade were memorizing the workings of electric bells. There were no electric bells in the village, indeed in most of Nepal, and the only visible evidence of electricity was from thunderstorms or, on rare exceptionally clear nights, from electric lights barely visible in an Indian town 50 miles distant.) After a year in the rural school, I continued to work for STEP for 4 more years based in Kathmandu.

That experience lead to a fascinating and challenging career. After pursuing an MA in development economics, I was hired by Management Sciences for Health to strengthen public health systems in developing countries. Over the next 40 years, I worked in over 30 such countries from Afghanistan (6+ years) to Zimbabwe (1 week). I met many wonderful people of many nationalities and fascinating cultures and believe that I had some success in making a difference for many, although much remains to be done.

Thankyou, Chris, starting me on such a rewarding and inspiring career.

I think it's a pretty good bet that Chris Jeffers was the guy in PC Washington who hustled big time to get my return to Nepal papers to my draft board just 3 hours before I was to be drafted. I never knew who it was who helped me until, possibly now. A small thing in the scheme of things - but a big thing for me. I wish I had put this together before his passing - to say thank you. There was another PCV, Duane Karlen, who had a similar experience with Chris.

Chris was the person who made a decision on my behalf and without my knowing, that really started me on the path that has been the rest of my life. When he was training our Peace Corps group in CA in 1967-8, he told the PC office in Kathmandu that they should post me at Durbar High School in Kathmandu. I did not learn that he had done that until much later. I was disappointed with that post at the time, as I wanted to be posted somewhere in the hills. In the end, however, it led to my working with others in the city and founding Nepal's first non-profit, New ERA. That in turn led me away from my electrical engineering background and to a life back in New Hampshire as a founder and leader of dozens of non-profits.

Looking back on it from this distance, a lot of what I have done and become over the last 50+ years can be laid to that decision by Chris. It is something I honor him for.

I have fond memories of working with Chris when he was on the Peace Corps' Nepal desk and I was a green regional officer in Peace Corps/Nepal. I also remember some late nights around the piano with Chris at the Saultee Hotel in Kathmandu! Thanks for the memories, Chris, and my sincere condolences to Dectora and the family.

I had the honor to know "Chrisji" as a fellow Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal. He was an extraordinary volunteer. His love of music carried over to making impressions on Nepalis. He visited me once in my tiny jungle village. Chris enjoyed hanging out in a local tea shop that attracted Nepal musicians - where he would play his flute including some Nepali tunes. I've visited the (now large) city over the last few years. Musicians from that time REMEMBER CHRIS TO THIS DAY and ask about him when I've visited. And he visited the tea shop 57 years ago!

My how we will miss you at Center Church. Your greeting was as warm as your handshake. Your piano playing always so great and pleasing, be it in the worship service or at the gala events you directed. Thank you and God bless you for all the pleasures you shared and the memories we treasure.

Our condolences. Chris was a wonderful person, creative and nice. It was a pleasure working with him in Nepal on the cutting-edge Science Teaching Enrichment Program (STEP) that he initiated in conjunction with the Nepalese Ministry of Education and USAID, as well as to be able to know him and his beloved Deckie when they moved to Connecticut. With Love and Many Good Memories, Rich.
