William Joseph Luby

1931 - 2014

William Joseph Luby, 83, of West Hartford, died at his home on Saturday, June 14, 2014. Born on March 25, 1931, he was the son of the late Thomas J. Luby, M.D. and Frances Meade Luby. A lifelong resident of West Hartford, Bill was a graduate of Kingswood Oxford School, Harvard University, and University of Connecticut School of Law. After graduating from college, he served in the U.S. Army following World War II, then returned to West Hartford, where he embarked upon a career as an attorney, initially as Luby, Murphy & Marsh, later as Luby, Basine & Sidor and eventually as a sole practitioner. After his retirement, Bill volunteered with The Old Guard and helped to deliver meals to those in need. An avid sailor, Bill appeared to be familiar with every buoy from New London to Cape Cod. He was a voracious reader and aspiring astronomer. Long after retiring, he continued to enjoy his role as family counselor. Bill was predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Ann Dully Luby, as well as his two sisters, Marcella L. Mansfield of West Hartford and Joan F. Luby of West Hartford, in addition to two brothers, Thomas J. Luby, Jr. D.D.S. of West Hartford and Meade J. Luby, M.D. of Port Royal, South Carolina. Bill is survived by his son William J. Luby and daughter-in-law Deborah L. Luby of Tiburon, California. He also leaves many nephews and nieces. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 21 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main St. West Hartford. Burial will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery.
