Betty Lou Slay

Hattiesburg - Betty Lou Slay, 78, of Hattiesburg, MS, died peacefully in her sleep on October 17, 2018, at her home. Born March 1, 1940, in Pickens, Mississippi, she is preceded in death by her parents, Kathleen Jones Elliott of Texas and O'Neal McDaniel of Mississippi; her late husband, James Slay; and her grandson, Joe Slay, Jr.

Betty was a homemaker after retiring from AT&T and The Roberts Company. She had a love of gardening and caring for her cherished family pets, which she enjoyed until her passing.

Survivors include her sister, Harriet Black of Texas; her four children, Jimmy Slay of Texas, Johnny Slay of Mississippi, Joe Slay of Texas, and Jerry Slay of Mississippi; grandchildren Misty Slay of Texas, Amanda Slay of Florida, Justin Slay of Texas, Jonathan Slay of Mississippi, and Cody Slay of Mississippi; nephews Keith Black of North Carolina, and Chris Black of Texas; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Private services will be held in Pickens, Mississippi. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Southern Pines Animal Shelter. The family wishes to thank those who have extended emotional support and care for Betty during her final days.
