Benjamin Coomes Obituary

Benjamin P. "Ben" Coomes, age 77 of Eminence passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021. Ben was a 1962 graduate of Eminence High School where he served as Class President, was inducted into the Eminence High School Hall of Fame in 2008 and received the Irvin Hayden Award from Eminence Schools. He graduated Western KY University in 1967 and University of Louisville School of Law in 1970. He was a 36-year member of the Eminence School Board and received the Warren Proudfoot Award Outstanding School Board Member of the State in 2007, served as President of the Municipal Attorneys Association in 1974, Senior Counselor of KY in 2018 and was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel. He was a member and long-time moderator of Eminence Baptist Church where he served as a deacon since 1973 and was named Deacon Emeritus in 2017.
He was Best Husband to 1, Best Father to 2, Best Grandfather to 4, Best Great-Grandfather to 4+, Best Friend of too many to count – He was a great man.
He is survived by his wife, Kay (Poe) Coomes of Eminence; daughter, Cathy Moore of Independence, KY; son, Benny Coomes (Lisa) of Smithfield; brothers John W. "Johnny" Coomes, II (Carol) of Eminence and William R. "Billy Bob" Coomes (Shawn) of Eminence; 4 Grandchildren: Jacob Moore (Emily Kate), Rachael Sholar (Greg), Emily Downing (Ben) and Andrew Coomes (Terralynn); and 4 Great-Grandchildren: Brody, Brooks, Everly Kay and Parker.
Funeral services were Monday, November 22, 2021, with Rev. Michael Duncan officiating and Rev. Chris Blair assisting. Burial is in Eminence Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jacob Moore, Andrew Coomes, Palmer Coomes, Harold Frazier, Jerry Roberts and Bobby Brewer.
Form of contributions may be given to the Ben P. Coomes Scholarship Fund, c/o Eminence Independent Schools; Hosparus, or Eminence Baptist Church.
