Evelyn Carberry Obituary

Evelyn Estel Carberry (née Greggs), 87, passed away peacefully at home in McDonough, Ga., on Oct. 13, 2025. Born on Feb. 14, 1938, in Anniston, Ala., Evelyn was the cherished daughter of Estel "Heck" Greggs and Emma Irene Helton Greggs. Her early years were rooted in the close-knit Anniston community where her family ran Greggs Grocery. She was baptized and later married at the First Baptist Church of Anniston. Evelyn graduated from Anniston High School in 1956. She continued her education at Jacksonville State University where she earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education in 1960 and a master's degree in education in 1968, setting a foundation for her lifelong commitment to teaching. Her career began at Fort Benning Children's School in Columbus, Ga., and continued at Jonesboro Middle School in Jonesboro, Ga., where she dedicated herself to shaping young minds until her retirement in May 1998. After retiring, Evelyn remained active in the field of education through her involvement with the Clayton County Retired Teachers' Association. She continued to support fellow educators and champion the importance of lifelong learning, embodying the values she held dear throughout her career. Faith played a central role in Evelyn's life. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Morrow, Ga., where she found spiritual fellowship and a sense of belonging for many years. Evelyn is lovingly remembered by her husband, Col. James Albert "Jim" Carberry whom she married on April 2, 1966. They shared 59 years together, spending the last 51 years living in Georgia. Also left to remember her is her devoted son, James Brian Carberry; daughter-in-law, April Wright Carberry; and granddaughter, Emma Caroline Carberry, each of Shreveport, La. Evelyn's family was a source of immense pride and joy. Beyond her professional and spiritual commitments, Evelyn had a variety of interests that enriched her life. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed travel, reading, and beach vacations. As a member of Clan Gregor, Evelyn delighted in attending local Atlanta events celebrating Scottish culture. She also enjoyed the hunt for a good bargain-her shopping adventures were legendary. Many family stories involve her being dropped off at the door and making a beeline to Macy's service desk for coupons before browsing a single rack! Evelyn embraced life with humor, directness, and practicality. Evelyn's legacy is one of dedication-to education, family, faith, and community. Her warmth, intelligence, and humor will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Interment and a graveside service will be held Nov. 5, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. EST at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, 553 Hwy 165, Phenix City, Ala. A memorial service will take place at a later time when renovations are completed at the First Baptist Church in Morrow, Ga., located at 1647 Lake Harbin Road.

Special thanks to Pruitt Health and Arose Home Care Services and especially Makesha Ahmed for their care and compassion during Evelyn's final few days. May Evelyn's memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
