DAVID TODD Obituary

DAVID G. TODD, 74, of Tacoma, Washington (formerly of Huntington, West Virginia), died on August 14, 2017. Born on August 29, 1942, in Huntington, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Clark D. and Suzanne M. Todd. He received an A.B. degree from Marshall University and a J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law. He was a Vietnam Era veteran, serving his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. He is survived by his loving wife, Marla J. Todd; two sons, Eric C. Todd and wife Kate of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Brian D. Todd and wife Jennifer of Seattle, Washington; the mother of his sons, Anne B. Noe of Erwin, Tennessee; three stepchildren, Sherri Venable, Lisa Garza and husband Lou, and William A. Hart, all of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Clark Todd and wife Sally of Mount Vernon, Washington; seven grandchildren, Emily Todd, William Todd, Sarah Todd, Nolan Todd, Graham Todd, Sarah Venable and Ignacio Garza; and a niece, Kendall Lee and husband Chris, and nephew, Christopher Todd and wife Jenny. David began his career as an attorney for the Veteran's Administration; the Department of the Interior; the Department of Labor; and the American Mining Congress. He was then employed by Ashland Oil and as Vice President of Ashland Coal and its successor, Arch Coal. He later formed a consulting firm and in this capacity served as Vice President, Business Development, for the American Foundation of the Blind Technology and Employment Center in Huntington. It was this final position that David spoke of so often as being the most exciting and rewarding work he'd ever done. He was devoted to his community through his involvement in organizations including the Huntington Federal Savings Bank Board of Directors; Huntington Area Development Council (HADCO) Executive Committee; Huntington Museum of Art, Emeritus Trustee; West Virginia Education Fund Board of Directors; West Virginia Business and Education Alliance Board of Directors; Cabell County Education Foundation Board of Directors; West Virginia Humanities Council Board of Directors; West Virginia State Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Huntington Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; United Way of the River Cities Board of Directors; and the St. Mary's Medical Center Board of Directors. David was also dedicated to Marshall University and the pursuit of quality education through involvement with the West Virginia Education First Committee; the Governor's Committee on Education; the West Virginia Senate Select Committee on Education; the Joint West Virginia House & Senate Committee on Economic Development and Job Opportunities; the Marshall University Foundation; the Marshall University Board of Governors and Board of Advisors; the University System of West Virginia Board of Trustees; Marshall University Artists Series Advisory Board; and the Marshall University Big Green Scholarship Foundation Board of Trustees. David was recognized as The Huntington Herald-Dispatch 1990 Citizen of the Year and the B.P.O. Elks 313 1996-1997 Citizen of the Year. He was a nemophilist and a lifelong learner as a reader in current events, history and art. The family wishes to thank Franciscan Hospice of Tacoma and Generations Home Care of Tacoma and all his dedicated and caring caregivers. There will not be a funeral service, but he hoped friends and family would raise a glass and share memories. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Huntington or Franciscan Hospice of Tacoma.

I am Honored and Proud to have known him. He was a wonderful and loving man. It was very difficult to
beat him to the check when we all went out to eat. That's what kind of gentleman he was. I will miss him dearly.

David was a good friend and a great West Virginian. My sympathy to his family. I am saddened at his passing. West Virginia needs more people like David and we can learn from his example.
