James Richard Carney

1935 - 2024

JAMES "JIM" RICHARD CARNEY, 88, of Huntington, WV, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at his home. Jim was born July 30, 1935, in Albert Lea, MN, to Carl Michael Carney (who died unexpectedly at 68) and Stella Emilie Skophammer Carney (who lived a long life to 95). He was raised on their family farm with his sister, Anna Carney Leland, and among many dear cousins and friends in their town. Jim enlisted in the Army in 1956, advanced to the National Security Agency, then worked for IBM for 32 years. His knowledge of trivia, especially Jeopardy, rivaled that of the Jeopardy masters - but his clicker was too slow! He was an avid bowler, playing in many leagues throughout his lifetime. He was a gifted woodworker, having made numerous original creations for his family in their home. Also, Jim instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of playing cards, Scrabble, and games together as a family. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Diane "Dee" White Carney, of 61 years; three devoted children, Michael (Donna) Carney of Indianapolis, IN, Samantha (Scott) Davis of Chesapeake, OH, and Megan (Louis) Adkins of Huntington, WV; his beloved ten grandchildren, David Carney, Jarod Carney, Anna Carney, Chris Davis, Cecelia Jaymes Davis, Emily Davis, Sofia Davis, Grace Adkins, Lauren Adkins, and Kennedy Adkins; and his special niece, Marcia Leland Monson, and nephew, Michael Leland. The family is grateful to Becky Bare, RN BSN of ECCC and Lisa Valentine, RN BSN of Hospice for their care especially in recent months. Jim was deeply kind, intelligent, brilliantly witty, selfless, stubborn, and lovingly playful. He will be missed. In keeping with his loving and generous spirit, it was his decision to donate his body to MU's School of Medicine Gift Registry. A memorial service celebrating Jim's life will be Monday, July 1, 2024 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 828 15th Street, Huntington, WV. Visitation and reception will follow the service at the church's parish hall.
