VELMA PORTER

VELMA PORTER, 91, of Teays Valley, W.Va., formerly of Hamlin, W.Va., went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday June 4, 2014, at the Hubbard Hospice House of Charleston. She was born November 21, 1922, a daughter of the late Jeff and Ida Woodall Ashworth. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jaruel E. Porter; two brothers, Odbert (Betty) Ashworth, Lyle Ashworth, and one sister Glenna McComas. Surviving to cherish her memory are her sister Helen Saul of Salt Rock, W.Va.; four children, Lois Harshbarger (Hubert) of Yorba Linda, Calif., Arthur (Linda) Porter of Barboursville, W.Va., Sharron (Johnny) White of Hamlin, W.Va., and Nancy (Jack) Adkins of Culloden, W.Va.; nine grandchildren, Tawna, Todd, Tammy, Jeff, Pam, John, Beth, Jason and Julie; 13 great-grandchildren, Alie, Cia, Laurana, Lillie, Tanis, Willem, Collier, Kira, Brenna, Bailee, Alex, Ginny and Andy. Velma was a longtime member of the Salt Rock Methodist Church, known today as the Salt Rock Community Church, where she served as Sunday School teacher, choir member, VBS teacher and cooked many great breakfasts, dinners, and homecomings for visiting preachers. Velma and her husband were former owners/operators of Porter's Super Dollar Inc., of Hamlin, W.Va. Above all, she loved the Lord and served him faithfully all of her life. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Salt Rock Community Church, Salt Rock, W.Va., with Pastor James Caldwell, Jack Adkins and Matt Fulks. Burial will follow at Porter Cemetery, Salt Rock, W.Va. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin, W.Va. Friends may express their condolences at www.handleyfh.com.
