She was chosen as a Champaign News Gazette All State Cheerleader in 1966 during the IHSA state basketball tournament. Go Runnin' Reds! When she was 17, she was crowned Junior Miss Decatur and went on to place in the top 10 in the state competition. She also played the guitar and sang in a musical trio called "We Three."
