Emma Macklin Obituary

MASON - Emma C. Macklin, 65, of Mason died 1:55 p.m. Wednesday (May 30, 2007) in her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Pagel Funeral Home, Edgewood, with Stan Bushue officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour before services. Burial will be in Leith Cemetery, Mason. Memorials: Lincolnland Hospice or Make a Wish Foundation. Emma was born Dec. 26, 1941, in Effingham, the daughter of Charles D. and Edith A. Pontious Robertson. She helped her clients at Kates Tax Service for over 30 years. Most people dread the tax season, but Emma looked forward to it. The Kates were not just employers; they were family. She retired from Griffith Trucking. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed collecting coins and spoons from her travels. You could always find Emma at a bowling alley; she not only had a love for the game, but also a love for the people she bowled with. Her life revolved around her family. Her grandkids will always remember her lugging around her 1980s enormous video camera to tape "her boys" racing. She was the happiest when she watched the boys ride their four-wheelers. She said it was like music to her ears. She married William M. "Bill" Macklin on Dec. 15, 1959, in Mason Methodist Church. They had a unique closeness and a special bond. They were true soul mates. He preceded her in death in September 2003. Surviving are her sons, Kent (Sabrina) of Decatur; Kurt (Tina) of Argenta; mother, Edith Robertson of Mason; brothers, John (Sherry) Robertson of Altamont; Guy (Debbie) Robertson of Mason; sisters, Rose Stewart of Springfield; Arliss (Derle) Budde of Mason; grandchildren, Josh Macklin of Maroa; Nick and Jordan Macklin, both of Argenta; Brad (Amber) Saul of Sullivan; stepgrandchildren, Graham, Whitney and Emma Wene, all of Decatur; great-grandchild, baby boy Saul, due in November; godchild, Dana (Dean) Drees of Indiana; several nieces and nephews who have always held a special place in her heart. She was preceded in death by her father and husband. Her family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses and the great staff of Lincolnland Hospice who helped take such good care of her. A special thank-you to her sister-in-law, Harriet Higgs of Pleasant Plains, for her loving hand and heart. Andrew Rueter, legendary country star of Effingham, for serenading her with a personal concert during her last days, and, finally, her family and friends for making "her last wish" such a success. She will always be remembered for her way with words, her giving heart and her love for her family. Online guest book at www.legacy.com/herald-review/Obituaries.asp

I had the pleasure of working with Emma through Heartland Classics in Newton. I have spoken to her many times on the phone and several times in person. I loved her sense of humor and the sound of her laughter always made me smile also. She was always so helpful to all of the employees here when we had any kind of problem. I knew just from conversations how much she loved her family and friends. She will be fondly remembered by all of us here at Heartland Classic Cars.

I have known Emma for nearly 36 years. My former husband, Tom Easterling, worked with Bill and we used to ride motorcycles with Bill and the boys on the property. Later, I would see Emma at tax time. Losing Bill was devastating to Emma. Now they are together. Kent and Kurt....your mom and dad were truly special people.

Our sympathy goes to the family of Emma Macklin. Emma and I were in many business classes together at Effingham High School. I have many warm memories of our friendship in school. Emma was a special person. Throughout the years my husband, David Steffen and I enjoyed seeing Emma and her husband Bill and hearing their family news. Emma was a loving, giving person and will be greatly missed.
