Julio Jr., 29, whose real name was Julio Nivar Jr., was dead on arrival Sunday at Bridgeton Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Pam Smith said. She said privacy laws prevent the hospital from releasing information.
Details about how Nivar died were few. Co-workers at the radio station in Miami said Nivar's family declined to make public the circumstances surrounding his death.
"We're in mourning right now," Enrique Santos, a fellow DJ at WXDJ-FM (95.7), said. "More details will be released later."
A detective with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office who investigated Nivar's death could not be reached for comment Monday.
Nivar, his 7-year-old son and the boy's mother had apparently traveled to Maine over the weekend. Nivar had worked his last shift, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., on Friday before leaving town.
El Zol's website posted a "rest in peace" tribute to Julio Jr., but listeners on the station's chat room were baffled about Nivar's death and at first thought it might be a prank. In the past, the station's personalities have faked deaths.
That's not so this time, said Santos, who described Nivar "as a great young talent." Funeral services for Nivar will be held later this week in Miami at Bernardo Garcia Funeral Home, 12050 SW 117th Ave.
El Zol is popular with young Latins and is well-known for its top-rated Morning Zoo-style show called El Vacilón de la Mañana, or The Morning Hijinks.

i do not know where to begin when it comes to julio. he is an all around amazing person and touched so many people. every time he spoke to someone he gave them respect and his time. his smile was contagious.
he treated me like a sister. i met him through my boyfriend, rusty. they were really good friends; both helping each other out when times were rough. i went to party with him every saturday at vision and he always mentioned my name during his broadcast.
losing him was not only hard for my boyfriend and i, his family, and friends, but for all of miami and all over the us. god bless you julio. we love you and think of you everyday.

Man, I'm in total shock! This world is less better because you're no longer here. When I met you at the Shell gas station (SW 107th and 16th St)it seemed you were out having the time of your LIFE! You were soooo happy and a straight up cat. You didn't make me feel wierd about talking to a Big Radio Personality. I appreciate the night at the studio when you gave me some pointer on how to be a radio personality and what it takes. Thank you. I had the priviledge to even give you una "bola" (a ride) to a gas station where you met with a friend. I truly feel awful right now. Goodbyes are never hard unless you know you are never going to say hello again...Julio was a great friend aswell as person! I will always remember him as being a part of some of the greatest memories of my life! He is still alive inside of all of those who loved and cared for him. The pain will slowly die with time and not be so hard but his memory will be stronger with each day that passes. God will bring us understanding and peace.
