Allan Applestein Obituary

Allan H. Applestein

January 16, 1932 - January 3, 2025

Punta Gorda, Florida - Applestein, Allan H. died January 3, 2025 in Punta Gorda, Florida. He was born January 16, 1932 in Baltimore, MD, but chose South Florida as home in 1961, living first downtown, then in Coral Gables and later, Aventura. Allan was a true polymath; an avid reader, brilliant and learned across many subjects. He was a serious tennis player for many years, and a lover of the arts, regularly attending the symphony and ballet. Allan was proud of his Jewish heritage and actively supported the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and Jewish Home for the Aged.

He is survived by his three daughters, Amie Devero, Andrea Bivens (Jim Eisenberg), Abbie Applestein (Zvi Argad); and by his grandson, Jared Bivens, Esq. Allan's parents Rose and Aaron Applestein; his sister Betty Semer; and his granddaughter, Julia Bivens all pre-deceased him.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., on Monday, January 6, 2025 at Mt. Nebo Cemetery Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, please honor his memory with a gift to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Jewish Home for the Aged. Online guestbook at segalfuneralhome.com

Allan had the sharpest mind, intellect and wit I have ever encountered. He was profound and determined and with an incredible work ethic also fortunate to have 3 daughters.

Allan is the kind of person that was always ready to help anyone who needed legal advice. He came to my help at a time when I was being strung along by unscrupulous construction businesses, when I had a death in the family, etc... He helped build my confidence in dealing with legal matters. I will miss his wit, his humor, his vast knowledge, his kindness....

I was deeply saddened to hear about Allan´s passing. He was an extraordinary mentor to me, and while he could be a challenging boss, the lessons I learned from him have shaped my career and my confidence in immeasurable ways.

One memory that has stayed with me is the morning he asked me to call Bernie Madoff and demand the return of a $1 million deposit. I was 30 years old, shy, and completely intimidated, not just by Allan, but by the sheer audacity of the task. Yet Allan believed in me, and his unwavering confidence pushed me to find my voice. I´ll never forget the mix of fear and determination I felt as I told Mr. Madoff that I´d personally reach out to the DOJ and SEC if he didn´t wire the money back that day. Against all odds, he did. After that moment, I was never afraid to speak up again.

Allan & I were "colleagues" at the Miami Jewish Home and I have fond memories of his time and treasure! And, I love even more that he was married to my Bayside HS geometry teacher-Judy Gould! May they both rest well!
