Carlos Mielgo Obituary

MIELGO, CARLOS JR. May 20, 1961 - March 15, 2008 Born in Guantanamo, Cuba and died in Hialeah. He was the oldest son of Marta Mielgo and Carlos Manuel Mielgo. He grew up in Hialeah and attended St. Thomas University. Carlos was the budget manager of The Miami Herald newsroom until his illness forced him to retire. He devoted his life to his family, his friends and helping others. His special spark and generosity will be greatly missed. Carlos is survived by his partner Joe Vazquez, of Hialeah, FL, his mother Marta, of Miami, FL, and his sisters Maria and Marta, also of Miami. Other close family members also mourning him are his nephew and niece Andres and Daniela Perez, his brother-in-law Javier Brito and his cousins Barbara and Fernando Perez, and Elizabeth Hernandez, and his godfather, Anibal Guerrero. Joe Vazquez would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Bojana Bhardwaj (Hematology/Oncology), Dr. Ana Botero (Radiation Oncology at Memorial Cancer Institute) and Dr. Aizik Wolf (Neurosurgeon). There will be a viewing at Ferdinand funeral Home, 2546 S.W. 8th Street, from 6 pm to 10 pm Tuesday, March 18th. A Catholic Mass, officiated by Father Philip Fabiano, will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery Chapel at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, March 19th, before the burial at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery. Reading all the expressions of remembrance by others made me think that few people evoke so many genuine feelings of sympathy with their passing. Carlos deserves every beautiful word written about him. We miss you Carlos. We miss your humor.. your wisdom.. your professionalism. All of us who worked alongside with you for so many years feel the pain of losing a great friend much too soon. I share your strong faith knowing that you have "gone home" to be received by our Lord. My deepest sympathies to Joe, your mother, sisters, and to all who grieve this loss. Rest in peace Carlos.

Joe,
Words cannot express how I feel. Carlos was such a wonderful person. He will be missed by all. You my friend have truly shown everyone what love is all about. I am sure Carlos is looking down from heaven with a smile on his face and is blessing you. You have so many wonderful memories to hold close to your heart. With much love...

Carlos,

Although almost 30 years have passed since I last saw you, I have never forgotten you, my childhood friend, or your wonderful family--your mom and dad, your sisters Maria and Martica, and yes, even Abuelo and Abuela. Oh, the times we shared growing up together in Hialeah!

You were two years older than my brother Bobby and I, and light-years ahead of us in grace and sophistication. And yet you befriended us, a couple of ragamuffin gringos, and taught us a little something about Cuban culture and the importance the small good things in life.

I remember what a fine dancer you were, doing the Hustle and the Spanish Hustle with your sisters on the tile floor of your living room; how Bobby and I envied your smooth moves and admired the bevvy of beautiful girlfriends you paled around with as you got older.

We taught you several profane expressions in English, and you taught us a few in Spanish; the funny thing is, I can still cuss like a Cuban sailor but can hardly recall the more proper expressions we learned in Spanish class. Such is the nature, I suppose, of young boys--how the most important, the most colorful things stick to them like pollen on the legs of bees.

I remember your love of everything Elvis back then--his moves, his movies, and his music. We wore the grooves off Elvis records at your house, and watched all the reruns of his movies on your console TV. Ditto with James Bond, Star Trek, and I Love Lucy. And then there were all the movies we watched together--Jaws, Animal House, and Holloween being three that stand out most.

We got into mischief, too, like the time you helped us convince my mom that the movie Flesh Gordon was the Big Screen equivalent of the old 1950s TV show Flash Gordon that she grew up watching. She didn't understand why the newer version was rated R, until the bawdiness of it filled the screen and she marched us out of the theatre before we even had the chance to finish our buttered popcorn.

I can't tell you how saddened I am to stumble upon your obituary in the Miami Herald. I will always remember your smile, your kindness, and your wonderful sense of humor. I never had a better childhood friend, except for my brother Bobby, who also passed away far too soon, almost nine years ago.

If you see him in heaven, I'm sure you'll pick up where you left off so many years ago. Tell him we miss him, as we do you, old friend.

My heartfelt condolences to your partner, Joe, and to your mom and sisters.

Joe I just want to take this time to let you know. I could only imagine your pain but I am praying for the comfort you need at this time in your life. May Gods riches blessings continue to fall on you and as time goes on may the pain get lighter. Gods word says "Cast your cares on me for my yolk is easy and my burden is light". That also mean your hurt and pain. Remember you are loved. Cheryl Russell (Bellsouth)

Carlos was our dearest and closest friend along with Joe for the past 12 years. We have many fond memories of our times spent together which we will cherish forever. Carlos was one of a kind and the most generous and loving man we have ever met. He has been our inspiration for the last two years as we shared in his courageous battle. We loved bringing him his matzo soup and whitefish salad. He always said he was a Cuban Jew at heart. We will miss him and will love him forever. We will be taking care of Joe always.

Carlos,
Now that you are in Heaven, Heaven will be a better place. I will always remember the energy that your presence left. After any encounter with you one just felt good. Even if you were upset. I don’t know, but you just had that great way of getting upset that made people feel energized to find a solution.
The words that keep ringing in my head when I think of you are "Oye corazón". I use to love all your budget variance explanations. They were very colorfull. You were so passionate about everything that you did and always expected perfection. This type A personality of yours inspired all those who worked with you to be a better person. Carlos, since you got sick, I've been very impressed with your prater Joe and have thought to myself just how lucky you were to have such caring person by your side but the truth is that you were both lucky to have each other. Under the same circumstances you would have done the same thing for him. I send you all my love and best wishes in your new journey! You will always be remembered and missed!

Carlos,
God must have looked at all the joy and happiness you brought others throughout your much too short life and knew he needed you by his side to help with his work. You are one of the finest men I have met in my life. Much, much more than my boss, you always listened when I needed you to. You stood up for our department when any of our folks were disrespected or bullied and you were always fair. Your door was always open. I pray we can work together again. May you be at peace eternally. I will cherish our short time together for the rest of my life.

Idy Fernandez

March 17, 2008

As a freelancer, you're at the bottom of the totem pole in the newsroom, but to Carlos there were no corporate levels. To him we were all equally important and if we needed him, he was there. Though I'm not at the Downtown mothership anymore, his laugh, smile and vibrant personality are some of my fondest memories of the place. To Joe and Carlos' family, my prayers are with you and I am so very sorry for your loss. However, Heaven has definitely gained an amazing angel.

March 17, 2008

Carlitos was just this extraordinary human being who would befriend anyone he met, no matter his or her station. We were his little family, especially us girls who work in the admin. department. On occasions, he would take us to lunch to celebrate our birthday or because we did such a great job. We would talk about everything. He loved to give us advise on matters of the heart, but more so, talking about Joe and how they met. He said he knew right away Joe was his soul mate... Yes, Carlitos, I too believe you have “been the luckiest man in the world”. You have a wonderful family, friends who love you, a soul mate who adores you and have given back to us more than you can image, with just being you, our Carlitos.

During my 3 years in the Herald newsroom not a day went by without a kind word and a smile from Carlos. I never once heard him say, "No, it can't be done." His kindness continues to have a vast effect on those who knew him. He personified love in the truest sense of the word.

Dear Joe:
I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved partner. Please know that my heart aches for you, his and your families. I am so very sorry.
You both have been on such a bittersweet journey filled with so much true love, loyalty, and dedication. I followed your story in the newspaper.
May God bless him and hold him in comfort and peace. May God bless you and help you so very kindly, gently on your grief journey until in God's time you are reunited in joy, free of infirmities and suffering.
This may not make any sense or bring any comfort right now, but although he is physically absent, he is spiritually present with you and will always be. You will see that it is true. You will know because he will let you know.
Feel free at any time in the future when and if you are ready or inspired to contact me. If not, it's ok. Anything you feel is ok. Don't let anyone tell you what you should and shouldn't feel.
God bless you my friend. I always cared and held you in very high regard and still do.
