October 9, 1962 - December 24, 2020
Hialeah, Florida - Carolyn Jane Dodson of Hialeah, FL, passed away on December 24th, 2020 at the age of 58 after an unexpected fight against ovarian cancer. She is survived by her brother, Frank G. Dodson, niece, Taylor Dodson, sister, Ruth A. Dodson, and nephew, Eddie Tanner. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth V. Dodson (1926-2020), sister, Patricia (Patty) J. Gerbec (1964-2011), and father, George R. Dodson (1926-1999).
Born on October 9th, 1962 in New York City, Carolyn spent most of her life in Hialeah. There, she held a long and successful career in banking, made friends with countless members of her community, and devoted herself to taking care of her family. In 2017, after five years spent commuting to and from Florida Atlantic University while simultaneously studying remotely, working full-time, and serving as her mother's caretaker, Carolyn graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems and Business Analytics at the age of 55. Her commitment to her education and desire to always continue learning and expand her understanding of the world around her was unmatched.
Carolyn was a fierce advocate for the people she loved and was always there to help her family, friends, and neighbors. She wasn't afraid to make friends with everyone she met, no matter where she went. Carolyn also made it a point to enjoy her life as much as possible. Music, sci-fi, sports, and astronomy were just a few of the things she was most passionate about.
Carolyn's love for space will live on with her spirit, as her ashes will be shuttled to space on an upcoming memorial spaceflight. Her family encourages everyone to visit to support the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, an organization that helps those grappling with an overwhelming diagnosis, advocates for patients, and funds research- and education-based initiatives.
